Who Is Wally Lau?
#21
Aloha, kakahiaka, SBH. Mahalo for the kind thoughts...lol! [:0] Don't think I'd last five minutes without some sort of confrontation, resulting in "cleaning house". [xx(] Have a great day!

As to Wally Lau vs. Kim, (which I believe it will come down to), still thinking which is the "lesser of two evils"...Both good men, however, both have lots of "baggage".

Darryl Oliveira is endorsing Wally Lau on the radio. Oliveira did a really good job managing the tropical storm and lava flows. It was a bit chaotic but a lot of stuff worked out, showing good judgement and management, they really put in the overtime when it was needed. Wally Lau is taking credit for being in the county directors chair during the West side Civic Center, which is probably now turning profits from just the excess solar power alone.

Thanks for that enlightening tidbit from the ever trustworthy James Weatherford.

Seems to me if Mr. Lau had sufficient integrity and a functioning moral compass he would have exposed the outrageous Kenoi spendings and lifestyle or he would have quit. Instead he was a silent part of the problem and betrayal of the people.

Harry Kim is a known, not the greatest politician in the world but he has an honest track record. I'd like to see Pete Hoffman win this race but the population of the Big Island has yet to be known for it's intelligence, ethics and humanitarian efforts.

Conversely, if Mr Lau claims he "had no idea", is that who we want running the County?

My partner and I have separate credit cards and bank accounts. I have no idea what he charges on his card, and he doesn't know everything I charge on my card. When I worked for a major Fortune 10 company, I had a corporate credit card, as did most of my co-workers. I didn't know what they charged on their cards or they on mine...and I certainly didn't know what my boss charged on his card.

It's fair to ask Mr. Lau what he did or didn't know about the Mayor's P-card usage. But to assume he knew or should have known -- or to state as fact that he knew -- is a disservice to Mr. Lau.

Obviously I'm naive to expect more of a "managing director" with a $119K/year salary.

Mayor Kenoi travelled extensively on taxpayers money and stayed in 5 star hotels including hostess bar services. Given your logic, the managing director of the county would not know the whereabouts of the mayor nor how to get in touch with him when he travelled?

kalakoa,

"...Obviously I'm naive to expect more of a "managing director"...."

No, you're not naive, though seemingly cynical. As exemplified by this false modesty. Thats okay, except you don't provide a factual basis for your perspective. Instead you rely on conjecture and assumptions, usually from a pessimistic viewpoint. Again, that's your privilege. However, I have a question about your (mis)use of quotation marks. I'll quote;

"The primary function of quotation marks is to set off and represent exact language (either spoken or written) that has come from somebody else."

Earlier on this thread, pg. 1, on 6-22, you referred to Mr. Lau as to whether he "should have known" about some alleged transgressions (and Punatic007 chimes in just above on same). You placed that in quotes, suggesting someone else said it and you are repeating it, exactly. That's the function of using them, to let the reader know that you are (accurately) quoting another person. I can't find in this thread where anyone said that. I know it's your opinion based on other posts (that's the conjecture you practice that I refer to above). This caught my eye when I saw your post today when you wrote;
"...if Mr Lau claims he "had no idea"....." and I went in search of where Mr. Lau said " I had no idea", or where someone in this thread wrote something to the effect that " I spoke with Wally and he said he had no idea". So, kalakoa, did I miss these quotes of things that were actually written or said, in this thread ? If not here, where?

Otherwise I'll have to assume that your use of quotation marks is to add the appearance of something that was said by another but is not truly the case, as if by doing that it would be more believable to the gullible. Which is why I write above that I haven't seen you provide a factual basis for your opinions and that you generally rely on assumptions, apparently to reaffirm your own worldview.

In regards to you, Punatic007, and all others who believe that the County was embezzled by Billy Kenoi and that he committed crimes while in office, you remind me of the wing nut Republicans with their Behgazhi/private server witch hunt of HRC. And, I'll presume like them, when the findings are laid out in a complete and objective manner, you'll cry foul and add another figment of fiction to your conspiracy theories. It's cool, your life, your reality. Just don't confuse yourselves with rational, fair minded citizens of the County who are engaged in the process and know the individuals that you so easily besmirch or slander.

^^^Ahh, The "good 'ole boys club" supporter, HiloPuna. Fascinating that you apparently think you know more than the Attorney General's office in the investigation of Mayor Kenoi and all other agencies involved in the investigation of his criminal behaviors, some of which he has admitted to in the media. How interesting, wonder if you believe your own spins?

On subject of Kenoi indictment;
I'll say that one can never truly know another, and what they're capable of. So with that understanding I'll just rely on the facts as I know of them, my opinion that the political theatre required an indictment, and my belief that the process will play out fairly. I'll accept its results.
Will you?

BTW: Your last sentence / question seemed more self-revelatory than pondering.
