A Hawaii woman was one of two people injured in a bear mauling in Alaska.

On Thursday, Aug. 18, wildlife troopers in Sitka were notified by the U.S. Coast Guard that two people had been mauled by a brown bear in the area of Sitkoh Bay.

They were identified on Monday, Aug. 22, as Anna Powers, 41 of Hawaii, and Michael Justa, 26 of Juneau.

According to state officials, the Coast Guard was able to transport the victims to Sitka for medical treatment.

Follow-up interviews revealed the two were conducting a guided nature hike for several tourists when they were confronted by a sow and cub brown bear and ultimately mauled.

Officials said one of the victims managed to deploy pepper spray and the bears eventually left the area.

One victim has already been treated and released while the other remains in the hospital with more serious injuries.

Officials have not disclosed who remains in the hospital and who was released.
