Kenoi's personal finances will be under spotlight
#31
The video was taken in the hospitality room at the Hawaii Congress of Planning Officials Conference.

At every workers conference I have attended, hospitality rooms are for attendees of the conference, usually hosted be an interested party & are work events (i.e., everyone there is usually there for work related contacts, not quite a private party that is social....

As this was a political conference & the room was filled with representatives & interested personnel, I feel that the correct behavior in this situation would be to behave as it was work-related. I have viewed this video a couple of times & it looks like Mayor Carvalho (mayor of the host island....one should always take ones cues from the host!) is dressed & behaving as if it was a work-related event & seems a little uncomfortable with the disruption.

That said, It should be obvious to most anyone, at this point, that Mayor Kenoi has a problem with separation of his personal and his "politically correct" professional (i.e., in Hawaii, procurement of alcohol is not within the politicians professional relm) procurement & consumption of alcohol...

Certainly seemed cringy and awkward for some of the people in camera shot.

He was there as Mayor Kenoi, Mayor of Hawaii County, not Billy Kenoi, private citizen, and should have behaved accordingly. I don't care how he behaves at a private party or even out at a bar with his buddies, as long as he gets a sober ride home and isn't spending public money, but this is not appropriate behavior when he is at an event where he represents the people of Hawaii County. If the video was from a private event in a public place like a wedding reception at a hotel I would say he still has an expectation of privacy, but not in this case.

I am not in any way defending BK's actions. I am condemning the mindset that anyone in the political sphere has to assume that every word and every action is fodder for the universe of Facebook gossips and snipers to make hay from.

What purpose did the video serve other than to (further) embarrass BK and his family? BK's political career is over - he may be able to avoid a jail term, but he won't be serving in elected office again any time soon.

All it did was offer an opportunity for some self-righteous spiteful little twerp to give one last kick to a guy on his way out. Let's everybody just pile on...

Geochem, I do agree that the person taking the video might have had motives for taking it.

That is nothing new, and any attorney worth his salt would know that when you are under federal investigation, all bets are off when it comes to any displays that are done in any public setting...

So my question is, "Why would a bright attorney want to further expose himself, his family, friends & supporters to these antics? He has got to know that ANYTHING he does in public will be looked at, and possible investigated, if not by the feds, then by the media & social media.... "

That is the real world.

ETA: the only logical answer is that he is NOT thinking, he is acting on a compulsion... perhaps an addiction... but his actions are what are causing the media sensation, if he had not acted like a dunk frat boy, there would have been no video to discuss!

I have heard terms very similar to "self-righteous spiteful little twerp" used to describe Kenoi on numerous occasions over the past eight years. I've never liked him, but I grudgingly had to give him some credit for being clever enough to get elected. The whole way he has handled himself during the pCard episode, however, made me doubt his basic intelligence. Some of his public statements when the story broke were very unflattering, and now we have the drunken tirade on facebook. Kenoi was at a planning conference with a public purpose, so he doesn't get to claim privacy, even in the hospitality suite. If his family is embarassed, whose fault is that? They have my sympathy, but he should have thought about them before he behaved so badly.

As far as his political career being over is concerned, someone quite correctly pointed out to me on another of the now numerous "Kenoi screws up" threads how a comeback is not beyond imagination. So if it seems like piling on to point out yet another nasty episode, just remember that in the world of Billy Kenoi's unbounded ego, he has done no wrong.

acting on a compulsion... perhaps an addiction... like a drunk frat boy,

One of Billy's defenders a few weeks ago suggested he didn't own a credit card in his name because he's just too gregarious, and generous with his friends. As we watch a bigger picture emerge, perhaps it shows he has a general overall lack of control.

“We’ve got to be as clear-headed about human beings as possible, because we are still each other’s only hope,” James Baldwin to Margaret Mead in the book A Rap On Race

Alcohol addiction would explain alot of things with Billy..he might even use that as a last defense if all else fails.( I think admitting he was an alcoholic might help actually.) A few months of treatment.. keep a low profile... for a while... back in politics after some time has passed.

ETA.. I find it interesting that Kaua'i didn't even bring it up in their news outlets.

Where Billy goes wrong is an extreme lapse of discretion by assuming that everyone in this private party was a friend or fan.

the rules of the game have changed. For Billy not to know this certainly supports the alleged alcohol problem many have tried to pin on him.

In retrospect, if any of the Council people had joined Margaret Willie and done their job, we wouldn't be dealing with this because as an impeached Mayor he wouldn't have been representing the Big Island at the Hawaii Congress of Planning Officials Conference.

The Mayor admitted to the County Council that he did something wrong when he misused his pCard on personal items which is a breach of his fiduciary responsibilities and the Council decided to let him off the hook. These so called professionals are making a mockery of the state constitution, the Hawaii County Charter and our Hawaiian codes and somehow they are able to get away with it. I expect these elected officers to take serious the obligations they are under to serve the public with the highest ethics in discharging the duties of their respective office. The highest standards. Not the lowest. I believe these obligations are real and not imaginary, theoretical concepts. I wonder what material the County Council thinks is impeachable?

The Mayor has a staff of really talented people who are suppose to know the job and who get paid almost as much as the Mayor to keep him out of jail. Billy corrupted them too. Nobody thought they had to follow the law. Just follow Billy. Billy the Goat Kenoi. We should stop electing our pubic officials as if we're holding a beauty contest.

Bottom line is that our Mayor has a visible and noticeable drug/alcohol problem. I suggest that Billy check into rehab and get some help. As time goes on it becomes abundantly clear that the County Council and the Ethics Board have failed the people by refusing to do their duty in exercising their right to investigate the Billy Kenoi pCard matter.
