The first time I heard "punatic" was about 3 years ago. It was used in a derogatory way to describe the unemployed/trouble-makers in Puna not contributing to society. In the context of this forum it's used more as a badge of honor (with a wink than a derogatory term. My take on it is that it describes the folks crazy enough to make the move to a place that has gotten a pretty bad rap over the years. (Especially on the Kona side.) Just my two cents. Perhaps others have a better definition.

Funny, I consider myself a Punatic - I love it here. Considering a move from the mainland, for many, is about living the life of a vacation, at least that's what it starts out to be. But,,,,, you can't keep that up forever. Sooner or later, reality sets in, and we find ourselves dealing with the same kind of issues we delt with elsewhere.
Aloha, the weather, the beach, attitudes, the respect there is for taking a deep breath, it's truely different.

When I use punatic, it is in a playful sense, party hearty, yet having the gumption and ability to roll up the sleeves and dig in the garden, or jungle, to get a job done!
Yes Tim, I too think of it as a badge of courage, someone with a pioneer spirit willing to do the adventure of something new and who doesn't need all the glam of the Kona side, and chooses to make a go of it on the east side. We will visit the Kona side when we need 3 or 4 days of beach time, but Puna will be home, where the heart is. I think of it is a compliment to peoples spirits. Aloha, Mella mella l

The first time I heard it was about 12-15 years ago - there was a women's softball team called the Punatics with mainly women from Mtn View/Kurtistown area.

To get the right answer, you must first ask the right question. If you are planning to sell t-shirts and bumper stickers, the question you need to answer is not who coined the word, but has anyone registered it as a trademark or copyright before your action, whether they coined it or not.

Howard:
It would probably be best if you knew what you were talking about. Copyright a word? I don't think so. Look here: http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ1.html#wnp and I quote: "WHAT IS NOT PROTECTED BY COPYRIGHT? Several categories of material are generally not eligible for federal copyright protection. These include among others: Works that have not been fixed in a tangible form of expression (for example, choreographic works that have not been notated or recorded, or improvisational speeches or performances that have not been written or recorded) Titles, names, short phrases, and slogans; familiar symbols or designs; mere variations of typographic ornamentation, lettering, or coloring; mere listings of ingredients or contents Ideas, procedures, methods, systems, processes, concepts, principles, discoveries, or devices, as distinguished from a description, explanation, or illustration Works consisting entirely of information that is common property and containing no original authorship (for example: standard calendars, height and weight charts, tape measures and rulers, and lists or tables taken from public documents or other common sources) quote:

I'll second that!
I proudly wear my Punatic Tshirt - copyrighted or no. I'm not on a baseball team, but I am crazy enough to LOVE living here. And as of tonight, I killed the fourth huge (really huge) cockroach - right on my kitchen counter - all by myself. I am proud to proclaim: "I am a Punatic!!!" Punacat

Are the tea shirts and stickers available thru any local merchants? Just curious if the Volcano Garden Art Center had any, or Hirano's.
