round trip ticket to Maui
#1
I usually fly back and forth to the Mainland. Now, I am wondering which is the best way to fly to Maui and back, next week. I will appreciate your comments. Mahalo

Hawaiian, using tickets purchased on a Hawaiian MileagePlus MasterCard.

There is only one choice out of Hilo to Maui "Hawaiian" and with only a weeks notice...you'll probably pay on average $100.00 each way

If you're leaving from Hilo Hawaiian/Ohana is your only option but pay attention when you are booking so you get direct flights (if the times work for you) rather than having to get routed through HNL. It will mean the difference between a 40 minute trip and a 3-5 hour trip.

I have flown Mokulele from Maui to Molokai and back and loved it. Every seat is an aisle AND a window. Since they fly much lower its more like a "flightseeing" trip than just transportation. Unfortunately you'd have to drive to Waimea or Kona to take them.

I have asked Mokulele if they are planning to service Hilo (no). I also asked Island Air and their answer was YES. Time frame was sometime early 2017. I also asked if they were planning any Hilo-Kona service like they used to and the answer was NO.

One time I was flying to Hilo from Maui on Hawaiian and I was routed through HNL but I got to the airport in plenty of time to catch the Maui-Hilo flight direct. I asked if I could switch and they said their were plenty of seats but they would only switch me if I gave them $50. I declined but asked them how much more money they would make by not burning the fuel to fly me all the way to HNL, back over OGG, and then continuing on to Hilo. The guy said something mildly unpleasant to me but didn't change his mind citing "policy". The sweet, sweet irony in the whole situation was after I got to Honolulu one of the Hawaiian jets had to be taken out of service for a repair and in the shuffle to re-arrange the passengers and flights they were offering a coupon for anybody willing to give up their HNL-ITO seat on my flight in exchange for taking the later flight. I was tempted to go tell them I offered to create a vacant seat on that flight previously but their blood thirsty "profits first" policy was more important than making a passenger happy, but I figured my commentary would be lost on them so I just enjoyed the Ozzy and kept my mouth shut.

Much cheaper to fly Mokulele out of Waimea, parking there is $2/day compared to Hilo $15/day. Just a few days easily pays for your gas to Waimea.
Funny some tourists pay $300 for about the same thing you pay $90 for!

Mahalo everyone for your input. I got a round trip ticket through Hawaiian Airlines for $182. Not too bad. I liked the idea of leaving from Kamuela but I didn't like the luggage weight restriction. Thanks again.

My wife and I are flying direct from Waimea to Maui at the end of this month. $88 RT each. Easiest airport ever. Well worth the drive. Incorporate a Costco run into the drive home and the trip practically pays for itself.

i guess it must have been a one time deal because all the fares from Waimea to Maui on Mokulele are showing up at $90.00 or more each way which is the same fare Hawaiian has from Hilo to Maui.

It depends on the dates. Some dates have a 'web special' for $69 each way. Check Oct. 18th and +/- a few days.
