there are basically 3 licensed surveyor companies for the puna area and the workers that are under them.
Please do not use anyone that is not licensed. the all too common problems of peeps building on the wrong lots in Puna, clearing the wrong lots etc...isnt worth the small upfront savings. If you dont have improvements to check you can ask for a staking (marking the 4 corners), and save some $. the most common choices for ordering online are referred to as "k1" and "K2"(reference to the purchase contract items used in real estate sales). k1 might be fine for knowing where your land starts and stops. If there's a building, (improvement) use a k2 to determine that there's no encroachments

Hualani -- Thank you. We are not building, dozing, or anything at this point. Our purpose is to get an idea of where the edges of the property are, cut a trail for easier access and to serve as a visual boundary. My husband has spent weeks dealing with hundreds of Albezia (from tiny to huge) and we figure this will make access a bit easier and keep him from wandering too far off property.

If were were going to do any type of improvement we would absolutely go with a licensed surveyor.

$1.00/foot doesn't sound right either. Figure a spag lot 1000' long and 125' (ish) wide would be over $2100.00. Island boundaries did one of our sides for under $500.

$1.00/foot (+) is what she quoted us. We asked for her to do the sides only -- one side is 773' the other 836' and the base quote was about $1600.00. She got a peek at the vegetation at the front of the property and now we are up to approximately $2000.00. Maybe we will check with Island Boundaries before we move forward.

As an aside, the County actually send someone out to verify they destroyed all but one of the front pins and we are waiting to hear back.

Wow that's expensive. I would expect a surveyor for $2000.

SCTH, if I understand right the $1.00/foot is for clearing the line? Can she just find the pins without that fee? If she can do that maybe there are other (cheaper) options for clearing the line?

This is what island boundaries quoted me in 2012:

For one property line 1045.44 ft long we can stake it for $500 and mark every 150 feet.

I don't remember what we actually paid because we had them find and mark 4 pins and mark every 150 feet on one line. We thought the price was fair for the estimate and when they actually saw the line that needed to be marked was clear they charged us less than the estimate.

If I had known the other place wanted $1/foot I wouldn't have posted their info, though I have no idea if that is the going rate now?

We did contact Independent, who did the original survey, they will re-survey the entire property (no partial / find one or two pins), cutting no more of a line than they need (same as Sara) for $4700.00 (this was a second discussion after we found out the most of the front pins were gone). Their original quote of $3500.00 was based on all of the front markers being intact.

In 2012 we had Daniel Berg (http://dlbandassoc.com/) do a boundary survey with map and report on our 1 acre lot. He did excellent work and I think it was around $800 or $900 back then for approximately 900 feet of perimeter. But of course a lot more information was provided, like the distance to the marker on the corner lot on the main road. Note that TMK maps can give you a lot of the information, but actually finding the pins takes a bit of work.

I do like Tink's method, though. Especially the arc method he described. Maybe I'll give it a shot next time I look for the boundaries or corner markers.

Interesting discussion. Does anyone know if HPP lots are pinned? I have never even walked it. Too overgrown.

I cannot speak to all of HPP, but in addition to our troublesome 5 acres that started this thread we have two lots in HPP. One has metal stakes at a the front (we have not tried to find the pins at the back). These are about ten feet in from the side of the road (the OA's easement). The second lot has nice metal stakes at the back -- we've not tried to find the actual stakes/pins at the front (there are recent survey flags).
