My friend was the deceased fellows roommate. I believe it is or was under litigation. Haven't seen her in about a year. If there was a settlement there would be the associated non disclosure agreements so it's likely no one would talk.
Nooooo....no one is implying that fossil fuels abuses are ok just because they want oversight into geothermal. I think geothermal as a concept is really innovative but like with all new technologies it needs more testing and oversight. We need community watchdogs to keep everyone honest. Anyone see the show on PBS last night about Rachel Carson who was the first whistle blower on the pesticide industry in '62? Silent Spring was her book that pioneered oversight into pesticides.

Was it reported anywhere? An obituary?

I don't believe I have ever heard of a non-disclosed death before??? If the cause was a medical condition, it's possible HIPAA restrictions could come into play as far as the details are concerned, but I believe a death notice or death certificates are publicly accessible.

True. Here is the article but minus the associated tragedy. The guy who died was older and had health issues. I'm sure that was PGV's stance.

Thanks Slow Walker,
I just hope Dr Friday rereads the entire thread and decides to rebuke his earlier publicly stated opinion that an ash purification project wouldn't work to combat parasites and fungal blight. My perceptions are based on exciting anecdotal history and copious supporting data. Promising signs have been seen to stall the trend of ROD, right here in Puna and could inform policy here on the Big Island as well as elsewhere in the world. ROD had been known to be 100% terminal prior to my lucky find. It is an attainable goal. It would be a real win for any scientist to get on board this project at the inception. For all my bluster, I don't hold grudges. Dr Friday, you are welcome to this experiment. I am not interested or qualified to do the sort of testing you do or expand much further on my own findings other than to treat a few trees every week. I have arguably done a lot at my own expense and need support moving forward even if it is through concurrent experiments. My feet are on strike. As a community, we got this.
I was informed by a friend who is following my thread that a more political response to his suggestion and wink would be to say "Thank you I will take it under advisement"
LOL!
Who knows? Then again it might be a friend of yours who writes things and then you respond.
And I might be the president of HPP. Who knows. Humans are funny.

Rachel Carson ... whistle blower on the pesticide industry in '62? ... pioneered oversight into pesticides.
Rachel Carson made an enormous contribution toward an awareness that large scale DDT use had an adverse impact on the environment, on the land, in the lakes, in bird populations and more. Her efforts brought about pesticides that were more targeted toward the pest, with less collateral damage on the surrounding area.
Fossil fuels on the other hand, are the energy source with the greatest direct and indirect impact on the environment today. Massive oil spills, by ship and oil platforms, destroying thousands of miles of beaches with thick oozing black crude, killing people, fish, turtles, and birds. Do you remember the hundreds of oil wells that burned for almost a year when Saddam Hussein's men lit them up while retreating from Kuwait? All of that burning toxic smoke rose into the sky, mixing throughout the various layers of the atmosphere, traveling on the wind until there was no place in the northern hemisphere that was unaffected by the particulate matter, even Hawaii. Petroleum emissions when burned are probably the largest cause of global warming today, not to mention the other toxic chemicals added after the refining process which also enter the air we breathe. Drive behind a Puna Cruiser with "tradewinds" blowing out the exhaust pipe lately?
Geothermal... not so much. A dozen sore, scratchy throats in Puna.
I would think if Rachel Carson were alive today, she might view fossil fuel production and its use as the 21st century's greatest threat, perhaps even more so than DDT in the last century.

Slow Walker,
Yes we are wink. Either way, I'm not above hand to hand combat, circus barking or sucking up in order to save these trees. If nothing else, a little entertainment for the mob. Shame is over rated, but then again so is pride, which goeth before the fall. Thanks for being an advocate Slow Walker. Great handle. My friend Kelii is always fretting about the tiny native plants in the forest that get trampled by the heavy footed.

For some interesting folk practices, Google; 'Rudolf Steiner' (Waldorf School founder), 'Biodynamics' or 'peppering'. Steiner believes moon cycles play into the vulnerabilities of whichever type of pest one is trying to eradicate with ash (mixed with sand) and that ash is a last resort defense against blight. There are some things that seem a little hoky, even to me....but it's already a practice even if it lacks much of a technical breakdown. Hello Malamalama!
I read elsewhere that certain Californian Native populations did controlled burns in the fall when pests were at their most vulnerable.

But then again lunar cycles effect tides, reproductive activity, volcanic activity, growing seasons, weather. You know, none of the important stuff. Burning and peppering when the weather is cold and the bugs are less active and more vulnerable in their nests and not at the height of reproduction in the summer just makes sense.
Entire primitive cultures were based on lunar cycles and from the vantage point of a presently, entirely poisoned planet, I'd say hind sight might be a bitch. If the Pagan cultures of Europe hadn't been systematically eradicated by Chritianity, we'd be living in a matriarchal world where all our practices would be ritualized around the solar and lunar cycles and you'd all be showing Mama a lot more respect.
Using a disease in order to treat a disease is also a basic tenet of medical practice, inoculation. What seemed hoky to me was the burning of the seeds. So specific and tiny...like homeopathics, strangely specific, I mean, who eats dirt?
The sky is tall and the Emperor is far....however Trump just gutted the EPA as we sit cozy in our little blogosphere. A day of mourning.

That's not how inoculation works at all. Viruses are physically modified from the wild version in such a way that they are not virulent when introduced to the host, however it is similar enough to trigger the host's immune response so that when the wild version is encountered the immune system is ready to protect itself before it can spread.
Homeopathy is a blatant fraud.
