Friday, Feb 17 - Puna (National) General Strike
#1
A National General Strike for Friday, February 17th** is in the preliminary planning stages. It's a protest concerning a diverse range of issues, health care, immigration*, women's rights, human rights, and more.

On the day of the strike, we will not got to work (unless absolutely necessary). We will not go to school (unless necessary). We will not spend any money (unless necessary).

Here is how it could pertain to us on a local level (from their website):
Some communities are planning a day of service. Instead of work, strikers will dedicate their time to serving neighbors in need. Find your people. Make your plan. Spread the word…

What are your ideas for Puna? There's plenty of work to be done, and many people here who need assistance. Since the issues involved in this topic are numerous and it's a national event, let's try and keep the discussion focused on what we can attempt to accomplish here in Puna, & elsewhere in Hawaii.

** Thanks for the date correction Lodestone

just pretend obama is still president and go to work... never seen such energy being expended to march around and carry on. Maybe volunteer your time or give your money to the organization of your choice and let the rest of the people carry on with their lives..dont block traffic, don't shout and wave signs, do something constructive and maybe next time it will go your way, that is the way the process works in our country.. win some, lose some..

The 17th is a Friday, which makes more sense anyway. A strike on a weekend wouldn't be much of a strike.

I think both political parties should fall in the river and wash downstream and go over the waterfall and never come up from the depths.
They only breed mistrust for the citizens.

Go to work. Volunteer when you are able to do so and think Aloha.

unless absolutely necessary

I wish I were retired and/or trustafarian so that I could spend all my time protesting.

Hawaii filed suit against the newly instituted travel ban

The one that's already been blocked by a Federal judge?

Even reported in the "local" paper.

The reason it was temporarily blocked was due to the suit brought by Washington which 16 states have joined, including Hawaii. It's possible this could be challenged to a higher court so having multiple states join the suit brings more weight to the case. Washington State proclaimed they are willing to fight the order all the way to the Supreme Court.

States in the case: CA, NY, PA, WA, MA, HI, VA, OR, DC, CT, VT, IL, NM, IA, ME, RI & MD

Out of the 60,000 rejected visas unfortunately 1,000's of valid visas were stamped permanently canceled over this executive order, some of those visas took many years for people to get.

It should be noted that Trump is aggressively fighting back http://www.cnn.com/2017/02/03/politics/f...e-ag-says/

I apologize for failure to note in the original post:

Attendance at this strike is voluntary, your presence is not mandatory. It's not even necessary to complain about others who wish to participate unless you want to... protest... their choice, in pursuit of your own life, liberty, and happiness.

If events or a rally are scheduled for Puna or Hilo on Friday, February 17th and you decide to take off work and show up, think of the satisfaction you'll have when you notice an unemployed neuvo-hippie couple in front of you, he with his white boy dreads, she pushing a $340 exercise perambulator with baby on board, knowing they didn't get a day off work like you did. Because they don't work. And tomorrow when it's Saturday and you enjoy some well deserved rest, they'll be dragging themselves off to the next rally, raising their voices against the newly relaxed banking regulations on their trust accounts at Goldman Sachs. Problems we salt of the earth working folks don't have to contend with on our weekends.

I am supportive of a general strike. My reasoning is that too many things that I care about are being dumped by this administration. Clean air, fiduciary responsibility in fund management, women's rights for healthcare, climate change planning, and many more. If we just do nothing we will soon have a place we don't want to live in for the rest of our lives and for our children and their children. If you let things slide now, you may never get another chance at making things better, before they get incredibly worse. Too close to the German pre-WWII times. I'm reading In the Garden of the Beasts currently and it is chilling.

I wish I could express myself better, I still sum it up as, until women are truly equal in this society, we will never have world peace.

Peace and long life

Radiopeg,
I support your right to protest at this rally and for equal rights for women. However with equal rights for women also comes equal rights to not make world peace.
When it comes that a human bean... for whatever reason.. so chooses not to work for world peace it doesnt matter what sort of whatcha macallit you have below your belly button.

Peace and long life to you also.
