Way to sanitize hot ponds/check bacterial levels?

That's good advice Rob, I will try to incorporate it, also uh....
It...well.... it IS a little hard to believe jrw, haha. I can't recall ever talking to a 90 year old person online, at any point. and I've been online for about 16 years now. I just kinda give them the benefit of the doubt.

Some simple rules I have learned. Kupuna, or elders, especially local kine you give no crap. Keep mout shut, move along, taking advice to heart. You will always be tourist, no matter what in a locals eyes. Treat everyone with respect and kindness, it goes a long ways, even if they are calling you a Haole, get used to it. Learn to keep mout shut, eyes open and learn the ways of the island and forget "on the mainland...". Tourii wahini are scarce, as more than likely on honeymoon, with ohana, or on a tour bus as resorts are up Kona side, so spend the time absorbing the culture, etiquettes and history of the land you are in and let the island teach you.

Show aloha and I will show you aloha back, it's that simple. Elders don't get to insult people just because they are elderly, it isn't aloha. Aloha is the prime directive. Also, that kind of divisive nature of "you will always be a tourist" doesn't help anyone. Aloha is about compassion and understanding, not weird racial barriers that make zero sense. Hawai'i is a place of many different races. Hawai'ians are not superior to me, and white people are not superior to Hawai'ians. We're all human beings, all homo sapiens, all equal.

glassnumbers,

You are on your own. Explaining Hawaii to Hawaiians seems like a bad idea to me.
Assume the best and ask questions.

I understand, but I'm getting a weird double message here. On the one hand, I hear "aloha" and the on the other hand, I hear "you will always be a tourist", a message that isn't aloha. So I'm confused.

Yeah, I'm not proud of my confusion, either. Thing is though, I don't give people respect just because they are a certain color or age. People earn respect by giving it. To me, telling me to keep my mouth shut and just let locals insult me whenever they want doesn't seem respectful.

telling me to keep my mouth shut and just let... insult me whenever they want doesn't seem respectful.

Here is the biggest thing I've learned from watching professional football. The first guy to shove or punch generally gets away with it. The player who responds gets noticed, caught, and penalized by the officials. And no matter how unfair it might be, or how much it screws up the drive and keeps points off the board, some of them... just... keep... doing... it.

You could never convince a monkey to give you a banana by promising him limitless bananas after death in monkey heaven.

As I said, fantasy doesn't always match reality.

Looks to be a pretty straightforward one to me. Don't antagonize your new neighbors by arguing over relatively minor matters, or you will seriously jeopardize your prospects for happiness here.

Is being "right" worth that?

Lots of good advice in this thread for you, and thanks for those who provided helpful information about the tide pools.
