Giant African Slugs came here via Japan to be used as garden ornaments and food in 1935 .(in mail and luggage). They were secretly cultivated . By the time "officials " found out, it was too late. Semi slugs appeared more recently. Both carry RLW to my knowledge.
I have lots of "garden ornaments" in my yard. My dogs think the shells are toys.
Last night's tv news said dogs can get RLW. as well as Parrots and horses.
Nobody knows where this will end until some funding and lots more research is done.

Wait until the species still floating on debris from Fukushima make their way to our shores. Exposed to radioactivity, forced to survive for years on end with only sea water, until they become, The 50 Foot SlugCreature From Ratzilla's Lagoon.

"So far, the Department of Agriculture has received more than 55 containers of trees, and inspectors found slugs in about nine of them."

Hey,we made CNN news.

Kind of a dubious deal.

Just saw a news report on KHON2 .

I can't link to the report but they are blaming organic food growers for the spread of this disease.

A neighbor in Opihikao who says he has "made peace" with the Little Fire Ants claims the ants eat slugs and decimate their populations. The individual concedes that his neighbors are unhappy that he does not engage in LFA control (they have).

But he states that the slugs are largely gone from his property. (And also that he has no more coqui. Apparently LFA eat the frog eggs in the trees.)

Hate to have these situations where we trade off one horrible pest for another--complete eradication of LFA would be great--but if this assertion is true it ought to be discussed.

I've got all three so there goes that theory!

ETA: There have indeed been less slugs and coquis lately but that could be due to the drought.

Great. More invasive species. Just what the island needs.
