I found most of the slug baits you can buy around here have replaced metaldehyde with some other less effective ingredient to make it safer for pets. I found Deadline still has it and is available at Pahoa Feed and Fertilizer. This works great for attracting and killing large numbers of slugs and snails. None of my pets go near it.

If you made a trap accessible only to slugs, would that solve the problem of pet poisoning, or is there secondary poisoning of things that eat the slugs?

COPPER FOIL TAPE?
I read somewhere that snails and slugs will avoid copper, I wrapped a piece of copper wire around the trunk of a papaya tree that attracted snails daily(2 or 3 times around) and have not seen a snail on the tree since. Has anyone else had similar results with copper? I was thinking of wrapping some wire around my catchment to keep the snails off, then I found a copper foil tape online 2" 55 yds for $50. it seems like this would be a simple solution to the problem I am having with the snails on my catchment. Has anyone tried copper to keep snails away? Any comments on the use of copper foil tape to keep snails and slugs away?

50% of gardeners swear copper works, the other 50% swear it doesn't. There are DIY videos showing how to make a slug / snail "hot wire" with wire and a 9v battery.

I say hook those wires up to a CAR BATTERY and really get results.

The best, safest, most efficient way to control slugs and snails is to broadcast an Iron Phosphate based bait in the area you want to control them in.
Iron phosphate stops them from eating almost immediately. Then, they go into hiding until they die. It does kill them slowly. It can take up to 2 weeks for them to actually die. But, They will stop feeding and you will not see them unless you turn their hiding spot over and look under it.
Broadcast it around every 2 weeks to a month. Your slugs and snails will disappear and stay gone. Keep in mind that controlling slugs, snails, and LFA's too is an ongoing thing. Your area will always be infiltrated by those from around where you're trying to control them.
Persistence pays.
I can now work in the brushy areas of our lot without a shirt on. I do not get bitten by LFAs anymore like I did when we first moved in.
I do not find much sign of the hated mollusks anymore. And, I don't treat more often than every few months for any of them now.

Iron phosphate is a fertilizer. It is pet and kid safe.
The only product name that comes to mind is Sluggo. It is now carried at HD. I used to buy it through Amazon. There are other brands with similar formulations.

Stomping on them, pouring salt on them, setting beer traps, and other such actions accomplish little other than giving you some enjoyment from physically destroying them and making you think you're actually accomplishing something. There are too many of them for those to be effective controls.
Metaldehyde bait formulas do kill them more quickly. But, they can also harm or kill pets, birds, kids, etc.

Sluggo wasn't available at Home Depot, but I did find another iron-phosphate-based slug poison called Natria Snail and Slug Killer at Target.

I tried Sluggo, it killed the snails, but unfortunately rats and birds love it, and the plants I was trying to protect got stomped and destroyed by doves.

Has anyone tried a bait with sodium ferric? This is what's in Corry's. I tried Ortho Bug Getta 2 with sulfer but it doesn't seem to work at all.
