A lot of these cars are stolen for the sole purpose of committing other crimes. They will steal a beater just to use it to crash through a gate. When our shipping container was broken into up near Volcano they used a vehicle to crash through a gate, I'm guessing it wasn't a vehicle they paid money for. The couldn't use bolt cutters on the gate because it was closed with a bicycle cable lock (they are actually pretty time consuming to cut through), so they knocked over the posts the gate was attached to, concrete and all.

I use to think that driving around a beater would be the way to go... But, hopefully your beater isn't a tacoma toyota or honda civic.

Even the older ones are worth more of a value it seems...

The way a thief mind works...

A) how fast can I steal this car...
B) how reliable is that car...

In my mind would be...

A) An older car would 'usually' be much easier to steal than a newer one that had a dead kill remote start switch that was only activated with a key fob.
B) If they drove that POS, here to X Store, and it's still going after 17 years, it must be maintained pretty well.

I do drive a junker tho. Not by choice... Because it still runs and gets me 42-44MPG. I love saving $! I often thought of installing a magnetic kill switch that would activate 5 minutes later after you turned the car off... Shrug....

This guy explains how it's done with less than 10 bucks in parts. One could add in a capacitor to keep the relay from activating so, if the engine dies you could restart it without having to keep finding the relay button.

ericlp - install a simple switch that kills the fuel pump. Hide the switch. The vehicle will start and run for a few hundred yards, maybe more, maybe less. Then it forces the jerks to RUN.

time for change.. next election mitch roth has been in the position a long time , liberal leaning soft on crime . more people moving into the island and included in the new residents are inmates coming back from mainland facilities being released on this island. many of them reoffend.

One of the security measures we have adopted are these "next generation" high-solar-powered LED spotlights that stop people from being able to look at our house at night. We aim them away from our house. They use lithium ion batteries and are bright enough that if you try to look at our yard/house/whatever from the street or elsewhere, you just get blinded by these lights and then you see spots when you look away. I've noticed less cars slowing down as they drive by since we installed them. We haven't had them very long so I can't speak of their longevity but they are effective at both both protecting our privacy and illuminating the property perimeter from our perspective.
