Jefyuaz: I would not drink well water from HPP without sending it through filtration and UV anyway. L
The exhaust is the biggest part, but if you build a little dog house for it you can make it almost silent ( needs ventilation). Some of the better standby generators have this already done

I wonder about the car muffler on a generator... back pressure where there previously was little to none. Interesting idea though.

Main ting is the open pit sewer, I have my well 150 ft away.
I think the problems can be mitigated somewhat by religiously throwing in lime (think it has to be a certain type*) after each use. And some other composting materials.
And neither rainwater nor urine should go in the pit. Not saying pit sewers are acceptable, but if someone insists on having one there can better (and worse) ways to handle it.
* maybe someone else has more knowledge on this...

Hydrated lime.
(And a Hail Mary when you throw it.)

I have UV and did a bacteria test that was iffy. We drink bottled or station water only. I wonder if another filter might help.

So you have well water and a UV filter? You got iffy results on the well water that was treated with UV? The UV should do what you need but there could be problems if you have too much sediment still at the UV stage. Germs that the UV would normally kill can be shielded by sediment. If that is the case then more pre-filtration can help.
I'm not really a "prepper" but I do enjoy having my own independent water system.

What am I missing? "Neither rain nor urine should go in the cess pit" what are you putting in there, dirty dishes?

My father had few set up with car mufflers but iron pipeing for winter time power failures that ran for years - probably still do

The major players, Honda and Yamaha, have got it all worked out. Trying to make a generator quiet is an uphill battle and enclosing a generator without cooking it is too. The Honda EU series generators have it all worked out.

Hey Seeb my father had that same idea when I was a kid I remember him getting a hold of a HarleyDavidson muffler. The local bikers around here seem to want their bikes as loud as possible so first thing they do upon getting a new bike is remove the mufflers and discard them. Well anyway it made a perfect generator damper. He attached it with a flexible corrugated metal sleeve. Then he added more flexible metal at the tip of the muffler and ran it into a 5 gallon bucket. Could barely hear anything and that's when generators were more loud in the 80's. Blub blub blub the only noise heard.
But back to the topic... so it's the outhouse bothering you most jefyuaz? Why? Can you smell it? I find nothing wrong with neighbors with outhouses. I have a flushing toilet but I went and built an outhouse because I like them. I like being in my back yard looking at my plants while I plant a #2.
Don't loan them an extension cord. Don't do the watt-o-meter thing. The neighbors will then turn into enemies when you go to collect one month and they cannot pay.
