The Puna Watering Holes?
#1
There are probably more, but we know of and use 3 county provided public watering holes in Puna: Pahoa, Keaau and Nanawale. I heard that someone thought the Pahoa location had the best tasting water. That brings questions to mind.

From the distance between them and the relatively low volume each uses, I assume they each are from their own source, probably a well, and being as they are government provided public water, there is probably a treatment facility at each source.

So, my questions:
What and where are the water sources?

How is the treatment of the water handled?

There is another one just North of Pohaku on the Orchidland side (I think just one spigot though), and there is the bank of spigots just up the hill and on the other side of the street of J. Hara. I always thought the J.Hara spigots were the best tasting, but maybe it's all psychological being that it's not at the dump.

The Pahoa one is located along one of the large water mains, probably coming from Keaau. The Nanawale one is also located along a main, that feeds the top half of Nanawale. They are not on their own wells or have their own treatment facilities.

The Kurtistown watering station always smells like urine. Occasionally you get to witness someone literally bathing under the taps. People also dump rotting food out of their old coolers and use the taps to wash the rot onto the sidewalk. Welcome to the third world.

I've seen people sending their naked kids to bathe in the dump taps, and I've seen people with hoses washing their trucks at the Pahoa taps. Nothing surprises me anymore. I've never encountered taps without garbage scattered around and often times some people think it's funny to unscrew the handles that make the taps function.

The third world actually treats clean, drinkable water with respect. Here, not so much.

I believe I've seen a showerhead on the Kalapana taps.

Best-tasting water is probably from Mountain View taps.

The conditions at the taps is one of the reasons we've gone to bottled water. I like county water, but got tired of seeing all the diapers. Also getting sick less bc am no longer drinking from refilled bottles that harbor unseen molds. Just saying.

I forgot about the diapers (actually, probably blocked it out). WHY? WHY do people dump used diapers at the water spigots? Especially at the dump spigots... YOU'RE AT THE DUMP. TAKE YOUR USED DIAPERS A FEW HUNDRED FEET DOWN THE ROAD and dump them.

The third world sounds better and better every day.

There are taps at the park directly across Hwy 11 from the Mountain View Post Office. The area sounds better than what you all are describing. I have seen piles of soggy cat kibble there though. It's been a while since I had to haul water though. My tank is normally overflowing.
