Or you may not. I've yet to see a place in the US with a higher number of Tacomas than Hilo, and guess what? 99+% of them are legally owned. At least, I think they are.[?]

WRT buying or bringing a Tacoma, buy on the mainland and bring - I netted $9K savings buying on the mainland and shipping to BI over the cost of new here... Probably could have done better with a little more effort invested in researching mainland prices...

Pre-clear your pets (dog, cat) with chip + a FAV-OVIN test regimen, and you can get "direct airport release" via the facility on Oahu.
Size the carrier to fit a B717 or you will be stuck on Oahu.

Bring the 4Runner and buy a nice Tacoma where you are and ship it over. Prices on the trucks here are absolutely ridiculous. You will save thousands, even after shipping.

Direct release is also available in Kona. Here's the checklist of requirements for neighbor island direct release:

There are also non-subdivision properties, sometimes with County roads instead of dysfunctional HOA.

Our dog had to stay behind for about a month so we weren't able to bring her here as "checked baggage" which is usually the cheapest way. We used Island Pet Movers on Oahu. They have negotiated rates with most of the carriers so even using their service, it was cheaper than if we tried to do everything ourselves. They got the dog out of AG in Oahu and put her on a flight to Hilo.
We brought the parrots through ourselves and having gone through the process, wouldn't ever do it again, we would have hired them to do it for us. Lesson learned.

We put our parrots on Aloha Air Cargo, they let us tape several kennels together so it counted as "one piece". It would never fit on a B717 that way and it saved us hundreds of dollars. It was a "free tip" from Island Pet Movers. They probably wouldn't let people do that with mammals. The other option for larger kennels to ITO is TransAir / Rhoades Aviation, though depending on their varying schedule, you may be looking at an extremely early morning or late night pickup in Hilo. Somebody told me that they are the company that moves the Hilton dolphins in and out of Kona when it's required.

I've also heard of people mailing their pets from Oahu because USPS cargo planes will fit a larger carrier. This was some years ago, before DAR on the Big Island.
