Hubby has been here for over a week now. BIG adjustment!

He is getting used to the many people I have around all week. He actually likes them for the most part. It has been interesting to see how the dynamics are changing with him here though.

I tried the "Tom Sawyer" approach to getting him to feed and clean the pigs He was too smart for that, so I just threw a tantrum and now he is doing it daily. Whatever works, right?

He has really been a great help doing many things and seems to appreciate the hard work I have done so far. I see him just sitting in the great room or out on the Lanai taking it all in once in a while.

Today we are having company for dinner. Made a giant pot of Chili, cooked a big old leg roast of pork from our first pigs and will make rice and salad. Hubby hopped in the kitchen and made a macaroni salad. He seems to like that room just fine too.

Together we even cut and hauled in about 50 or 60 logs for the fireplace. It's amazing what we can get done if we set our minds to it. Of course, that little electric chain saw helped me trim those logs down to size nicely...

Today we also took the time to really clean out the pig pen together. It usually takes me around an hour alone. It took two hours together. Still, he is learning and will get good at it soon enough. We did discover that there are lots of things growing around the ranch that the pigs love to eat, so now we are taking the time to experiment and see how to supplement the food supply from the farm supply store. For example, after we mow they love the dried mowed grass if it is long... maybe 12 inches or more.... and then there is this fresh green stuff growing in the banana nursery that I am trying to stamp out. I inadvertently tossed some in with their food and they went nutz for it. Yay! Then there is what my neighbors call duck week... a grass product that looks something like the Wandering Jew of 70's popularity. We just might make this home grown pork worth it yet!

Off I go to finish up some more laundry. Love these little breaks to reflect on how things are going. I can see we need to put up some fencing and turn the pigs loose to make a nice mud field for purple sweet potatoes. Fortunately, thanks to freecycle, I have fencing so it just might happen if I can get hubby and a couple helpers going.

Aloha for now..... Pam

Checked on the coffee trees and they are doing well. Standing up happily in this gret combination of rainy nights and sunny days. Today rained like heck and I bet they are loving that too. Also the fruit orchard is bursting with growth. Lamont Ranch in action!

Next adventure... have been strugglig with two Sears weed whackers for almost two years now. They are in the shop more than not. Made the leap this week; invested about $500 in a commercial Shindaiwa. Hubby is in heaven. Hopefully in the next few weeks he will weed whack all the stuff I can't manage to mow with the tractor!

Gumbo goes to the vet in ther morning to get the drains out of his ear. He let me give him a bath in my leftover bubble bath! Now that we have him cut short-hair style, it is much better.

The new tenant in the cabin is a delight. Many of you met Jennifer at the Punatic Patry here. Her 12 year old daughter is staying with her and she is wonderful. Today we three pitched in together and planted almost 500 Red Ti, Green Varigated stuff I can't remember the name of and Red Torch Ginger. I have been allowing mature plants to sit out in the rain to make roots. Now we are doing the cuttings and planting stuff. I see another commercial process getting started.... Lamont Ranch and Nursery? She has also gotten so much done in the garden that we have potato's going, green beans, lettuce... woo hoooo.....

So, plants and fresh veggies... and someday fruit.... and eventually coffee. Smile

Hubby has been working hard. The Dept of Education, which assured him he had provided everything they needed for licensing to teach is now sending him in circles getting new copies of transcripts and letters from his colleges. Apparently cetified copies of his credentials and transcripts aren't good enough; now they want the colleges to send letters telling them they granted him the right to the licenses. Sheesh! However it will all get taken care of. He is just so darned educated I don't think they believe it! He has his Masters in Education: Curriculum and Instructin plus 90 units... and California teaching credentials in Single Subject History Pre K thru 12, Multisubject K - 12, Learning Handicapped K-12, Resource Specialist Certification and all the little stuff like "no child left behind" (which we call no child allowed to excel), CLAD (Language stuff), etc...

All that education and I still make him clean out the pigpen! Hehehehe

Just an update.... love you all that stop by and see how things are progressing.

Aloha, Pam

Hello Pam and "Husband" Smile
It just boggles the mind. One would think that the DOE would be busting down your door to get him on board. I recently heard an elemetary school teacher barking orders to her class and was so shocked by her blatent mangling of the English language, I had to bite my tongue and make a quick exit - from the library, of all places! This area so desperately needs EDUCATED educators. I am very glad to know that he will (hopefully) be on board making a real contribution to the community. One that no amount of dollars could ever hope to repay. I wish you both all the happiness and harmony this beautiful place has to offer. Looking forward to seeing you both. Ahui houSmile

Tee-hee..I knew it was Bob! He had "the husband" on his name tag at the first (?) Punaweb party and I thought it was funny and probably will almost always call him "the husband" just because I seldom call anyone by their official name, instead I give them nicknames usually relating to personality or life experience quirks. I hope you and Bob are having a wonderful time together and I have faith that everything is going to work out just fine for you guys. I'm really glad to know he is here, that way if you get stuck in the mud, fall down the stairs or whatever dangerous mess you might get intoSmile he is at least around to pick you up or call 911!! Try not to test it though, okay. Ahuia hou and g/night pj

July 4th. Big celebration! Wow. Hubby is off in Volcano, a volunteer parking guard for the parade. Raining here but no wind so he will only be wet, not cold. Probably have a great time. Although he is not as verbal as me, he loves to participate in the community and this has proven to be a great volunteer opportunity for him, and to meet new people too.

We have made headway building the roof on the pigpen. We had a tarp roof for maybe 5 or 6 months. Was good but onve you get a tear, forget it! We should have the metal one up in two more days. Does that mean we get a topping off party? I guess it would be a little tacky to roast a pig to celebrate...

Half my neighbors ran out of water during this last dry spell. I am happy to say our tank did all of lowering about two feet... which left me something like 6 or 8 feet to go. Smile. This big old roof is definitely efficient at catchying water. It filled and was overflowing before we went to bed last night. Wow... what a little rain does.

Although there are a couple of mongoose terrorizing them, I have found two more chicken nests well hidden in tall grass. One has 8 eggs, the other three. These chickens of mine are very determined. One set of hatchlings has managed to get to the pullet stage. There are five of them. Another seven are babies and cute as the dickens. Finally, this season we are getting all the chickens we can handle. Maybe by the end of summer we will build a regular hen house for a dozen or so chickens and have eggs to gather. Is there a market for fresh eggs out there?

Our new tennant in the cabin is an absolute delight. She loves to garden and we work together on all kinds of things. Okay, she gardens and I help out a little. Her 12 year old daughter is having a ball with a kitten, our Gumbo, a hen and babies in a protective cage at the cabin, the pigs.....It's great fun to watch a 12 year old blossom with a generous smile and great spirit.

Not much else to tell. Hope this note finds you all happy and well, and enjoying yet another day of celebration in parasise...

Aloha, Pam

Pam.

Tell hubby-Bob thanks for helping out with the Volcano parade. Lots of cars, so we definitely needed help coralling them.
We had a great time. Like you said, wet but not cold. Lots of smiles.

Hi Pam,

I think we discussed this earlier, but say hello to "Hubby" Bob Lamont from Punawebber Robert La Mont. Such a small world. If either of us had monagramed shirts, which I doubt, we could share them.

Aloha,
