Jones act hurting Puerto Rico?
#61
Even when the flaws and deficiencies in their arguments are brought to light, they treat their own words as meaningless, worthless, and make no attempt to support.....along their endless trail..... tossed like smoke bombs into the conversation.

Such lofty language. And in there is my favorite phrase from Punatalk: unsubstantiated...comments. Which we see almost daily now.

Not only as in unsubstantiated (assertion of) fact. But as in unsubstantiated (and erroneous) opinions.

Sounds like a precursor to a reeducation campaign. To be brought to us by the "Committee for Proper Thought and Opinion on Punatalk."

"The Jones Act doesn't need to be suspended. It needs to be abolished. Once and for all, get corporate welfare out of our lives. But no, that's not the Republican mantra. For idiots that hold up the Republican illusion of less government while actually meaning corporate rape and pillage of the US economy for their own selfish greed, the Jones Act is a glowing example of their forked tongue BS."

Well except for the fact that the Dems were the majority for a few years there. Why didn't they abolish it?
Couldn't be the unions that support the Dems and vice versa .

McCain and Lee proposed to permanently exempt Puerto Rico from the Jones act. No mention of Hawaii. I guess we have to get 3+ million people, then have a massive disaster.

If you know anything about lobbies, they put money into both sides aggressively until one goes their way 100%. “The power of this maritime lobby is as powerful as anybody or any organization I have run up against in my political career,” -- McCain 2014

You can find politicians on both sides of the issue. Conservative national review

A group of Democrats in the House, led by Puerto Rican-born New Yorker Nydia Velazquez, this week called for a one-year waiver of the Jones Act for Puerto Rico.

Here is a statement one of our Senators made.

'I fully support the Jones Act I don’t support amending it or repealing it or providing any exemptions and here’s why. There is a reason that every Secretary of Defense going back to Ronald Reagan, every secretary of the Navy going back to Ronald Reagan, and every president has supported the Jones Act and that’s because we need the industrial shipbuilding capacity for United States Navy. This is a national security and national defense issue.”Sen. Brian Schatz – July 2, 2014'

Didn't know he was a Republican !

Unsubstantiated, as in:

1) A statement is made
2) Someone asks for proof, documentation, or a link for background concerning the statement
3) No reply is offered

It's nothing more than that.
Less like reeducation than the inability by the poster to further educate the readers of said comments.

It's interesting that you're OK with the freedom to post anything here, even out of thin air, but then find suspicious the motives of those who question the practice. I suppose it depends on whether you like or dislike empty rhetoric. In my judgement, it tastes bad, although admittedly it's less filling.

Obie, just so you know the "majority" held by the democrats was only 60 days, not two years. It's a common misunderstanding, but due to special elections, illnesses, Kenendy's death, etc. There were only 24 working days with veto proof votes.

1. 1/07 – 12/08 – 51-49 – Ordinary Majority.
2. 1/09 – 7/14/09 – 59-41 – Ordinary Majority. (Coleman/Franklin Recount.)
3. 7/09 – 8/09 - 60-40 – Technical Super Majority, but since Kennedy is unable to vote, the Democrats can’t overcome a filibuster
4. 8/09 – 9/09 - 59-40 – Ordinary Majority. (Kennedy dies)
5. 9/09 – 12/24- 60-40 – Super Majority for 47 working days.
6. 1/10 – 2/10 – 60-40 – Super Majority for 13 working days

to further educate...

"Democrats have won both legislative chambers every two years since 1962. In 2016, they just won literally every seat in the 25-member state Senate for the first time since Hawaii became the 50th state in 1959."

5 seats went to republicans in the State House in 2016...

quote from Daily Kaz - Steve Wolf 2016/11/26

Can anyone refute the above?

Frank, I don't know what you mean. 25 of the senate seats are democrat. Of the 51 house seats 5 are republican. It's a fact that is not in dispute.

So this (Jones Act) is not a republican issue where Hawaii is concerned, am I correct?

edit to add - (Jones Act)

Frank,
The Hawaii House or Senate representatives cannot vote on the Jones Act. Only the US House and Senate can. Yet, the Jones Act affects every citizen in Hawaii because almost everything is shipped in on vessels regulated by the Jones Act. It costs us money.

The claim is that the Jones Act protects the US shipping industry should it be needed in time of war. We also need a jeep and truck industry, a tire industry, and almost everything else in time of war, and yet those products don't receive the same protectionism.
