Must opinions be substantiated? (TMT examples)
#91
as they don't often delete their posts like gypsy.
gypsy has in the past made the rudest and crudest of comments, to stick the knife in, twist it a few times, then delete the evidence.

One of your gang is rude and crude and deletes her posts, and none of you call her on it. Some of your gang even defend her. Is it because she donates to charities?

I am quite impressed with how graciously he responds to rude and inappropriate posts directed at him.

Trouble is the people posting them don't think of them as rude and inappropriate.

I have to agree with punatic007 and Chas on this one.

I and other's may want to delete entire threads in the future so it would be helpful if you could explain how to do this. Mahalo Obie.

I thought this thread was all done for. Well this is an interesting turn, with these new opinions being voiced.

It's as good as the responses to April's Humor Section thread.

As I stated then: We can expect that some of our elder Punatalk commentators will continue to garnish their views with gratuitous insults.

Some opinions. Some comments. As the case may be.

I think it's worth quoting randomq's recent post given some recent posts in this thread:

"Let us all agree that trolls are trolls, and never respond to them again. It's obvious they are either not mentally capable or willing to accept logic or evidence to any level of substantiation soft, hard, or otherwise. To continue trying to convince them is an exercise in futility and a descent into madness!"

Some people just can't help making things personal and simply ignore the substance of the argument, no matter what the thread is about.

I don't know about calling people trolls.... that takes the discussion to another dimension and I get lost.

Deliberately switching "comment" to "opinions" to make a point - trolling.

Hijacking a thread to once again ask rhetorical TMT questions that have already been answered - trolling.

Making things personal rather than addressing the points - trolling.

Saying that someone keeps asking the same questions, even after they've been asked and answered before - not trolling.

Pointing out that someone posted that their questions are rhetorical and therefore not looking for answers - not trolling.

It's not that difficult.

Since we all see things a little differently, seems more productive to me to refer to the actual behavior such as hijacking as you mentioned as opposed to name calling. Aren't trolls ugly little creatures that hide under bridges?

From Tom: "Some people just can't help making things personal and simply ignore the substance of the argument, no matter what the thread is about."

Precisely the point I have made on several occasions.

From Tom: "Deliberately switching "comment" to "opinions" to make a point...

In retrospect, my attempt to draw distinctions between "substantiate" and similar words was a bit much. A topic with potential to be confusing.

"comment" vs "opinion" is similar. If someone is going to make a big issue related to the distinction between these two meanings, we need to see way more elaboration than we have seen. (Gee, might someone ever use these words interchangeably? How stupid they must be to do that.)

And an accusation of trolling here? What a stretch. Probably best to let BOTH of these semantic issues drop.

Want to accuse someone of trolling? Pick a more legitimate complaint.
