Article about man w/rat lung disease from B.I.
#1
Really well-done article about man who got RLD here on Big Island in Fall of 2016 and the hell he's gone through. http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2018/01/pa...ples-lives

I don't think i've ever seen a semi slug as small as the one in the photo.

After Mrs. Mimosa's experience at Kaleo's (finding the little slug in the salad), we no longer eat there. I sure would like to know exactly what restaurants this couple ate at.

"What bothered us is that nobody knew about it. We wouldn't have gone to Hawaii in the first place..."

Too bad there's no real research.

Sadly this is one of those times where a lawsuit might do some good.

A lawsuit is just more money that isn't spent to solve the problem.

The state does very little in the way of educating visitors about health and safety issues. (<<Understatement of the month.) I make sure I personally warn my guests about water hazards (flooding, undertow, look for lifeguard beaches, blah blah blah), parasites, insects, etc. I'd rather them be over-warned then under-warned. Seems not a week goes by, statewide, without a dead tourist.

I only skimmed the article but my BS meter is off the charts.

First, he got sick within a few days of the alleged exposure. I'm no RLW expert but I thought that the incubation period before symptoms occurred was much much longer than that.

Second: "We diagnosed it ourselves from the internet."

From the article: Experts say.... that the illness might incubate for a single day or for as long as six weeks before symptoms appear.

I guess you could question who these "experts" are, but you already said that you aren't one.

And I personally know someone right here on the Big Island who had to diagnose it herself because the doctors HERE couldn't. So I find it entirely plausible that these people would seek out answers on their own after weeks and weeks of getting nothing from the doctors in Gainesville, Fl.

I didn't find anything in the article to set off the BS meter. Not sure why you're discrediting his story. Some people get stricken with this ailment worse than others. It can also kill, drive you insane, make you commit suicide. Bad news condition.

Maybe your meter stay broke brah?

I gave up on local outdoor grown veggies as soon as the first reports of RLD started filtering in. I got tired of some hippie chick at the local farmer's market giving me a song and dance about how healthy their veggies were. I met one vendor that said the local dirt was a health benefit while suggesting I didn't even need to wash their "completely organically grown" lettuce. When I asked about RLD they told me it is a myth. Ah the joys of living in Puna.

As far as government irresponsibility.. oh my.. that's probably a topic best covered by our in-house government complainer.. kalakoa?

I was out picking Ti to feed the rabbit the other day, and when I came in I had a tiny little something on my finger, not much more than a milimeter long. I could barely see it. (and I had my new glasses on) It was a tiny semi slug. I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t seen it myself. Take care everyone. They’re here.
