Im not sure where this gateway center is planning to build. Yes...it does make more sense if its going in Keaau. But from the original post "Kau" to me means "South Point " area. I'm fairly new to the big island....so maybe there is an area called Ka'u besides the Kau district in the south. Can anyone expand on this?

My understanding of the Shipman development plan as outlined in the Herald-Tribune was that the new 32-acre shopping center was to be at the big road junction just outside Kea'au Town. Land use permits have already been approved, and construction is to begin in "two to three years." The article did not mention anchor tenants, but I seem to recall an earlier article mentioning KTA.

Kau is the district in the South and I'm sure it's not going in there. FWIW

The 29-acre site is slightly smaller than the 36-acre Prince Kuhio Plaza center in Hilo. Subdivision of the 29 acres from larger parcels totaling 109 acres must be completed before the sale is final, Walter said.
At the crossroads of the upper and lower Puna areas, the center will serve a population of 30,000, Shipman said.
Shipman also announced that KTA Superstores and an unnamed drug store will be the two anchor tenants at Gateway.

Maybe, but maybe not, lots of things have been proposed for B.I. and never happened. I remember the big International spaceport (Space Riviera?) that was going to be built in Kau 20 or so years ago. I'm still waiting....

This shopping center is going on the woodsy land that sits between shipman park (soccer fields)and shipman industrial park. the entrance will be at the red light where keaau-pahoa bypass ends (or begins). It will no longer be called the "Gateway Center".I heard K-mart may be one of the anchors.Costco is coming to Hilo behind Walmart.Lowes is coming.
A hotel in Keaau is going to break ground any day.
This is all great as we need more stores and jobs.
What is a huge concern is the 10,000 acres. part of which is a resort being built on Puna's ONLY WHITE SAND BEACH!
The other part is the 5000 yes five thousand HOMES they plan on building.Which includes CONDOS,townhouses, and single family homes.
in the area between Hawaiian Paradise Park and Maunaloa nut Factory (ocean side). This subdivision(AKA ECO VILLAGE)will have its own power, water and waste treatments, schools, stores, medical facilities ect...The COMPLETION of this plan Shipmans are saying will take 20 to 50 years.
I am sure that is said to stave off activists as they are already designing home plans and looking for a supplier for building products.
I see phase 1 (aka a new subdivision) happening very soon.As the county just made it easier for subdivisions to get approval.I have also heard of a new 300 lot oceanfront subdivision coming to kapoho and a 200 acre one somewhere in puna, then theres the 500 homes and golf course in hpp.I'm sure there are even more in the works I have not heard of. I'am curious as to what effect this will have on our current "SUBSTANDARD"(no utilities or paved roads)subdivisions among other things.Yes I'd say this is the begining of the end. We'll be little Hilo and kau will be like the old puna.

I had read that the locals were upset about the spaceport thing because the pollution from waste to the land and waters would be devistating to the ecosystem there. I wonder if that had anything to do with the decision not to do it.

I believe the space port plan died when teh Challenger blew up. That was then end of any expansion thinking on the space shuttle.
Santa Maria, CA was also beginning a heavy build out for a space suttle center. That came to a screeching halt when the Challenger disaster happened.
Assume the best and ask questions.
