Really? I thought this was normal common courtesy in these parts, and not doing so is considered rude and intrusive.

Have not had any problems since we put that up.
We have cameras and dogs . Gate stays shut and locked 24/7 even if we are home and some one is always home . All our neighbors have cameras, guns and viscous dogs. Sign of the times . 4 and D in H.A.

"hail a camp or home from a distance" Right, it is not a bygone custom. My bad.

In dense cities these things don't matter as much. Not a big deal to take 10-20 steps from a public sidewalk to someone's door.

But this business of strangers in rural areas walking 50 yards down a private driveway for some sales nonsense?? It is surprising anyone tolerates it.

And this whole business has many people getting fences and dogs. Fully justified of course, but in a sense unfortunate. (There is an element of paranoia. And fences change the ambiance of a community.)

Kind of reminds me of some places on the mainland where they close all parks at dusk. Too hard to separate the good people from the bad people.

Sorry to say it, but this happens when communities allow criminals and bums to roam freely. If this continues in 30 years half of us will be in gated communities. (The other half comfortable with their fences, dogs and, maybe, shotguns.)

They are travelling salesmen. They want to sell you something. How much simpler do I have to make it?
Today one may have a Mother tattoo on his left hand. Next week it could be a cross dressing Nepalese, what difference does it make?

Recommended course of action: don’t buy anything. Ask them to leave before you get sucked in.

The problem with signs like this is that you can't legally shoot someone for trespassing. You'd be in big trouble even if the person was really a burglar. I believe that guy who lived in HOVE is still in prison for shooting a thief on his property.

A bigger problem for someone who decides to call their bluff and gets shot dead. It's legal to shoot an intruder on your property that's deemed a threat to your safety. Thief in HOVE must have been shot in the back.
