I'm going to fly Hawaiian to the mainland for the first time in a while, Hilo-Maui-San Jose. (Kind of tired of that United red-eye out of Hilo.) My carry-on bag fits their dimensions, except for the wheels which extend beyond. What have others experienced with Hawaiian? I'm wondering if they make you place your bag in that little metal measuring cage before boarding (like some airlines). I'm hoping they don't, and that my one inch wheel difference will be okay. It's not a very big bag!
Mahalo in advance for sharing any info.

I fly Hawaiian all the time and do so carry on only. I have never had them check my bag size. The only issue I see is the overhead compartment not being able to close. If that happened, they would just check it which is not bad since it would be last loaded first off.
In full disclosure I am very pro Hawaiian air and have posted recently about the flight attendants.

It might depend on how full the flight is. One time on a very full flight to LAX, I saw some people get asked to check in their bags. The bags in question were much larger than the carry on size requirement so there wasn't really much to complain about.
Most of the time, however, its just about "no holds barred". The amount of luggage I've seen some tutus bring on the flight is incredible. And the attendants at the counter don't bat an eye.

Thank you Mac and Mang.....great news for me. I'm really looking forward to flying Hawaiian again for a change. Appreciate your input.

Mang is right about them asking for volunteers to check carry ons. That's how I discovered the last on first off. Really wasn't a delay.

Kiana - I fly Hawaiian a lot for inter-island travel and have never seen anyone been asked to check the size of their bag. I can't say for certain what they do for mainland flights, but I'd be very surprised if you have a problem. If your bag fits on the 717s used for interisland travel, it'll certainly fit on the larger planes for Pacific flights. Incidentally, on the 717s, the overhead lockers are larger on the right-hand side of the plane - right-hand side as you face the flight deck that is, left-hand side as you board!
As for other airlines, Mangosteen is correct when it comes to busy times, I've only seen bags being checked for size on a full flight and then only very rarely - the cabin crew always seem to find a way.
I have a suitcase for longer trips. It has the maximum size for checked luggage except the wheels do stick out a bit more. I've never had a problem checking that bag in, so don't think airlines worry too much about the wheels, whether it's checked or carry on.
The only thing I'll add is to be considerate when putting your bag in the overhead locker (listen to the cabin crew instructions) and don't be the last to board with a large bag - those are the people who usually have their carry-on checked.

There are placards inside the overhead bins that have instructions on how to stow your bag.
No one reads The placards.
If the wheels stick out it's best to put the bag in upside down!

I've not seen those placards on any airline I've flown.

Basically anything not so outrageously sized that it clearly won't fit in overhead space is allowed as a carry on these days.
The little metal measuring cage is an effort to institute an honor system, which 95% of people choose to dishonor.
If in the rare case the airline requires you to gate check it, no big deal, they're doing you a favor. It will be in the jet way waiting as you deplane.
Placards inside overhead space? That's a new one on me too.

Mahalo to all for good info and shared experiences!
I had my carry-on gate checked one time, and it was the very LAST bag to come out through the baggage carousel. That was a bummer. It was first off of the pile as they unloaded, which meant all of the other luggage went on top of it and mine ended up arriving last.
