I agree, almost every problem can be solved, we have to start somewhere. Almost every developed country in the world has this issue licked.

Well, my first point aside (that this is financialy impossible - the liability is enormous and no insurer would cover) entertaining this idea as an excercise...

The types of restrictions you are implying only hurt those who are innocent.

Take for example drinking alcohol on the beach. Used to be fine, most were responsible and could handle a beer or two in public without incident. Some partied too hard and eventually people ended up drowning - down comes the ban hammer and no more fun (drinks) on the beach for anyone - yet those who break the law (and many do) still drink on the beach at their pleasure. Drinking is just one example - so many things are banned or illegal nowadays.

Segway back to guns - people who used guns responsibly will no longer be able to afford to do so because of insurance while those who misuse guns (criminals/psychopaths) will still find ways to obtain them and murder people.

But really all the above is just an exercise because this will never happen - that aside I grant you that there is close to a 100% chance you can get the state of Hawaii to fork over several million for a study nonetheless.

The AR-15 (Armalite 15) shoots no faster than my .45 pistol does(as fast as I can repeatedly pull the trigger). It's really hard to have this discussion when people don't know what they are talking about.

Strange, experienced gun owners such as birdmove seem to understand perfectly what is meant when people say that guns such as the AR-15 should be banned.

It is the size of the magazine for the AR-15 that makes all the difference. 30 round size, swapped easily. Much more fire power than a .45. This NY Times article is pretty informative.

.45acp, 15 round capacity, swaps easily, kills really well. The point is that once you can tag one type of weapon as unsafe, then you can tag them all. It's a slippery slope towards the Australian system, and that's not acceptable.

We can't imagine private insurers would take on a liability so enormous.
We don't want our Hawaii legislators to regulate the problem, because freedom.
Gun manufacturers are absolved of their complicity. You'd have more luck sueing a waffle iron maker if you repeatedly burned your pinky finger using the appliance.

Too bad for school children they don't seem to have the option (like everyone else) of sticking their head in the sand and pretending they're not part of the problem the next time an uninsured, easily licensed killer walks through their classroom door.

If I was a high school student in Broward County, I would sue for the right to concealed carry in school. Clearly, the Sheriff's Department is not going to save them.

Actually, that's a good idea, Hawaii can aspire towards the Australian system. The other states can follow when they see how it works.
