Thanks partly to being 50th in gun prevalence, Hawaii also has one of the lowest suicide rates in the nation. And the least murders by firearm.
What a great place to live. I support any law that makes it more difficult for anyone in Hawaii to get a firearm.

Since there is no big game on hawaii why are guns allowed anyway.. everything that people kill on this island can easily killed with a bow.

A chart that I looked at showed Hawaii in 3rd place. Go to the third chart down which shows deaths by murder with firearms (no suicides). Hawaii is beat by New Hampshire and Vermont, at least for that year.

The radically liberal NY Times has posted another article on guns. For those interested.
(There was quite a bit of dismissal here that the AR-15 is a particularly dangerous weapon.)

I asked for a definition of assault rifle (if you're referring to me, DK). Don't remember anyone arguing that an AR-15 is not a dangerous weapon.
In any case "assault weapons" were already banned for 10 years if folks don't remember. See the features that made a weapon an assault weapon and efforts to show the ban had any effect, one way or another.
Understand that I can mod my Ruger semi-automatic .22 with a bayonet attachment and a pistol grip and it would qualify as an assault weapon. Personally, I have no problem with another "assault" rifle ban. It is mostly about cosmetics, and I am not one that tries to make a weapon look "scary".
Probably people would feel better if they reinstated to ban...

And, Rob, I wish you well on the insurance idea. Nothing more to say after thinking more about though.
Cheers,

Breaking news from the NY Times:
WASHINGTON — President Trump on Wednesday repeatedly embraced a series of gun control measures, telling a group of lawmakers at the White House to pursue bills that have been opposed for years by the vast majority of the Republican Party and the National Rifle Association.
The measures still fall short of an insurance mandate, but it's a start. This should provide momentum to Rob's proposal made to Senator Russel Ruderman. Let's keep the ball rolling, our Hawaii legislature could take the lead on this issue.
The NRA spends most of it's money on state legislatures, that may change with these new national level proposals. If NRA lobbyists turn their focus toward Washington D.C, this may be the perfect time for Hawaii's citizens and state legislators to act. Here are some of the local politicians who receive NRA donations if you would like to contact them:
What do Tulsi Gabbard, Joe Souki, Gene Ward, Calvin Say, Cindy Evans, Sharon Har, Kirk Caldwell, Bob McDermott, Will Espero, Fred Hemmings, Clayton Hee, Kymberly Pine, Henry Aquino and Sam Slom have in common?
...
What they all share... is that each has accepted campaign donations from gun lobby interests. So did dozens of other local politicians, according to state Campaign Spending Commission data going back to 2008.

Maybe the gun enthusiasts here can suggest what sort of language should go into a law here in Hawaii that would have the desired effect, i.e. lets people have guns for hunting, target practice and "self defence" but makes it difficult if not impossible for some loser to kill 17 people in 4 minutes with a single weapon.

Considering that the anti-gun crowd here on PW is only too eager to extol the virtues of Hawaii's gun laws and the low number of gun deaths in the state - Why change anything at all?

Easy. Ban modern firearms. A flintlock musket is perfectly adequate for hunting pigs, right?

There's good, better, best. Hawaii's good. If you compare us to other states we might be considered better, but that's only because some of them are so dismal. There's room for Hawaii to improve and really be the best.
