They’re pretty understanding as long as you respond respectfully with a good reason why you can’t make it. We call it creative writing.

HOTPE:
"No, but I have been selected for Kona. If you live more than 100 miles from the courthouse, send a map showing the distance from your home to the courthouse and you'll be excused. Puna to Honolulu should more than qualify." The state rule is 70 miles. What it doesn't state, however, is if that's as the crow flies or actual driving distance. It's relevant because, for instance, Kailua-Kona is about 70 miles from HPP as the crow flies, but obviously a much farther driving distance. However, I do know one or two Hilo folk who have got out of serving in Kona due to the distance. Assuming Wao's summons is for state court, I think a simple letter stating the distance rule should get her exempt from attending. http://www.courts.state.hi.us/general_in...ce_faqs#Q8

The federal courts/United States District Court - ie... District of Hawaii Court in Honolulu rules are not the same as State of Hawaii Court rules with regard to Jury duty.
Two different courts.

So is it a state or federal/grand jury summons? I find it hard to believe it's not clear in the letter.
