Contra Flow on Highway 130 schedule
#11
Why don't we demand that if Harry Kim gets his gift, that it be spent on highway 130.

http://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/2018...5-million/

“I consider this a gift to the people of Hawaii Island,” Kim said during an interview. “It’s a tremendous gift to help us catch up.”

A gift ? It's our tax money !!!

6AM to 8AM sounds OK to me, because there's daylight then. In DC the contraflow can occur when it's dark, which messed me up on one of my visits.

For a visitor, taking the same route as earlier in the day only to see headlights coming straight at you is a bit disconcerting.

I'm a little confused how this will work. Could anyone explain?

H-130 is a two-lane road between Shower and Kaloli, so a contraflow means that one of the shoulders has to be used, and given the term "contraflow", I assume it means using the shoulder in the Pahoa direction. Have I got that right?

Tom - I'm sorry that I was the cause of some of your confusion. I didn't look at the diagrams in Rob's original post closely enough and I was forgetting where 130 is 2 lanes vs. 4 (I'm still getting over the novelty of full-time 4 lanes between Keaau and Shower...). As I noted in my corrected post above, they're taking the two existing traffic lanes plus the 6' paved shoulders and reallocating the real estate into three narrow traffic lanes that will only have bare earth shoulders. Southbound traffic will not be able to turn left (into HPP); anyone heading southbound will need to create their own virtual jug-handle turn by turning right and then working their way to a spot where they can make a left turn to reenter northbound 130, and then make a right into HPP.

Oh my. Today was disastrous on Hwy 130. At least 3 accidents. A trip from P#257;hoa at noon took 1.5 hours to Hilo. Me thinks the county needs to do some more figuring out before they put this contra lane into full time service.

What time did you go? I went through at about 6:10 and it took a little longer than usual, although there were no other issues than I think people were slowing down to rubberneck because there were two cop cars with blue lights (for no apparent reason) at Pohaku.

I had heard on social media that otherwise people were saying the commute was improved?

today worked fine. The Contra flow for the morning traffic is a GOOD thing. If you decided to ignore all the signs about the contra flow..and still decided to take that right turn off of shower, then that is completely on you my friend. Blame yourself. And folks need to understand.....HWY 130 is a STATE Highway. The county has nothing to do with this. The special duty police officers are hired by the company stripping the roads.

Would it be better for people who live along or near Shower to make their highway entrance via Kaloli? Sounds like it might be.

When turning right onto the highway from Kaloli I noticed the shoulder lane was not being used. I thought this was supposed be where the second lane was to begin so people could take a right without waiting for traffic to clear like they used to do on Shower. Or maybe nobody was using it because they thought they weren't supposed to?
