It was pretty painful watching this video. It ranges from safety concerns to genocide of Hawaiians. Few people seemed to even listen or perhaps understand what was being presented and many didn't even want to hear it. They were unable to really talk about the project at all because they were heckled the whole time.

Almost all the anti-TMT arguments were reused, complete with secret military missile launches. In the mean time they've removed the location of Ka'u from the bill. Maybe we'll get them to build it here in Puna. Then we can have another 5,000 post thread complaining about it like other changes -- roundabout, geothermal, etc.

The "anti-science/anti-technology/anti-development" attitude has gotten really old, at least for me.
It's pretty clear that "most people" don't want any progress, especially if it infringes on their "country lifestyle".
Which would be fine -- if it were clearly stated as a policy (so people didn't have to waste their time/money trying to build things that aren't welcome) and if there were some way to pay the ever-increasing cost of government worker salary/benefits packages.
Somewhat (not) ironically, many people who resist progress are also elder resident homeowners -- their retirement benefits aren't taxed, and their property taxes aren't going up, so failure to expand the tax base doesn't really cost them anything extra.
If you can't beat 'em, join 'em: I'm investing in a transition to ag/tourism, because that's the only acceptable business around here, and structuring some "income stripping" to avoid the high taxes. I could make a bigger contribution to the economy, but it's not worth the fight.

I wondered, what would happen if a company approached Ka'u residents with a proposal to cover their land in plastic sheets and irrigation hose, then repeatedly sprayed thousands and thousands of acres with toxic chemical applications by air, and finally burned up the crop filling the air with billowing clouds of smoke around their homes, schools, and beaches. Finally, the company would drive convoys of giant oversize trucks alongside grandma in a Honda Civic and school buses loaded with children. Would they welcome a new sugar cane industry to their district?

I've had a similar idea which goes like this: propose a huge retail big-box mall on Saddle Road across from the PTA. It's not "near someone's house", it creates no traffic congestion, and the military has pre-desecrated the land, so it should be totally acceptable, right?

I wish the video had included an opening shot outside the entrance to the meeting room. I have a feeling there was a guy off to the side selling beer for $3 a can to some of audience members who gladly shared their insights on the project, as well as personal viewpoints about nearly everything else. After all was said and done, the beer guy, if there was one, was the only person who came out ahead on the deal.
If there wasn't a beer guy, as lodestone suggested maybe the presenters were lucky to get out alive.

I LOVE paying devil's advocate. Anti-development, ok. Anti-science/Anti-technology? Not from that crowd. They were pissed that the project was getting rammed down their throat with no opportunity to say anything. There was no deal. The people from the company were simply investigating potential sites for their project. That's what you do before you buy land and build the support structures. Nobody rammed anything down anyone's throat. Did you watch the video? Do you understand the sequence of events that led to the meeting in the video?
