Honolulu to new scooter business - Bow down
#11
The NY Times story is good. A notable quote:

"Advocates for older people said rampaging scooters would also encourage them to seek the safety of their homes, becoming shut-ins....Somebody whizzing along at 15 miles an hour, that’s a symbol of entitlement and arrogance,” said Fran Taylor, a retired medical reporter.

I think people rampaging around in Beemers and in helicopters over my property are in symbols of entitlement and arrogance."

No, they paid for the privilege. Didn't you get a copy of the rate sheet?

Lime has now suspended their new service.

What a shame. It was a neat (and cheap) alternative to using taxis or The Bus. It could have really done some good for tourism, too.

“Somebody whizzing along at 15 miles an hour, that’s a symbol of entitlement and arrogance,” said Fran Taylor, a retired medical reporter. She called the scooters “a plot of the young people to kill off all us old farts so they can have our rent-controlled apartments.”

I was in Waikiki yesterday. Saw a few of them around. I guess you need an app to get it started. There is a scan code on them. I even say one in a neighborhood 4 miles away just sitting there.

The motorless versions have been illegal for years on Waikiki sidewalks. They're called skateboards.

You use the app to send them a picture of your driver's license when you "register" for the service, which (putting on tinfoil hat) makes it obvious that they're not making money on the "service" itself.
