Introduce yourself
Hi. I'm 52, partnered, longing for Puna. We're in Castro Valley, CA now.

A question for all the Punatics on the internet: Is cable internet available everywhere cable is? How does it compare to DSL? My SO says cable internet is a non-negotiable demand. Comments? We're leaning toward higher elevations.

Hi, waynesb.

Welcome.

"Higher elevations" has different meanings to different people. Up here in Volcano (3,500 ft) many streets have cable internet. You have to look street by street though.

We have DSL and it's great. It's as good as the DSL we had in Oakland.

Waynesb,

Also in Volcano, we're using Roadrunner (Oceanic Time Warner) cable because the house was already wired. It's good and fast. The only DSL that I've used was at a friend's place in HPP. My impression is that the cable is faster, up and down, but I haven't measured either one.

Either one sure beats the slow phone lines that we suffered with living only a stone's throw from Silicon Valley for the past 8 years (Santa Cruz Mtns on the SF Peninsula). We discovered that a neighbor ran a wireless network for our spread out community in CA. It was pricey, however, and we would have had to cut some trees down in order to get the line of sight needed. Not worth it.

Since this topic is "Introduce Yourself" I am going to suggest that discussions of cable and internet service are better placed in the Building in Puna forum. That way the dialog can be archived and accessible to others in the future.

Thanks for the responses, Robin & Les. I think I'll go over to the "Building" forum and lurk for a while.

See introducing yourself isn't all that painful!! LOL It is so freeing not being a lurker anymore!

A hearty welcome to the Wolfie's, Glenn and Laura and looking forward to their joining the Punatics when they retire in 3-4 years!

Brian the Fishboy and his lovely Mary in Discovery Harbor. Aaron our resident computer guru is very familiar with that area I believe. Welcome to you both!

Robin C in Volcano good to hear from you and welcome to the PW glad you found us from the other side! LOL
Wayne in Castro Valley!! Hey I know where that is, just up the road from my old old stomping grounds! Hey Wayne, just build it in Puna and they will come you know the DSL stuff and such.

Sorry our official welcome wagon person Carrie is so busy packing up right now and getting all in order that she hasn't had a moment to spare, so I do and I say welcome to our virtual neighborhood, as I know she would do very elegantly also!

Ask what you wonder, tell what you know, songs and lyrics included! Aloha, Mella L

ALOOOOOHA!! Good to hear from so many! Brian, Waynesb, Hulagirl...Yes we are packing maniacs right now...also finishing very small final things on our home in Tempe, Arizona which we are about to put on the market!

We will be on Hee Street in Hawaiian Shores Rec by 2nd week in September if all goes smoothly. There are so many bright and warm people on this forum...feel free to jump into the pool (tide or otherwise) - the water's fine!

If there's a question about the area whether the culture or building -- go ahead and check the search engine at the top of the page and you'll be stunned at how much information has been shared here...this forum probably shortened our search and seizure of our new home by a couple of years LOL!

E Komo Mai!

Aloha ~ My name is Kim and I am looking to buy 2-3 acres of land, possibly in Fern or Hawaiian Acres, but am open to suggestions, as I am listening closely to all of your advice about the Puna subdivisions. My mom & her husband also want to relocate (from Wisconsin - brrr!) to Puna and buy land next to mine. I have been a 10-year resident on Oahu and am a Zookeeper at the Honolulu Zoo. I love my job, but am tired of the hustle bustle and want to go to the country, Puna Style. Would love to work at Panaewa Zoo and find some horseback riding trails! I welcome any advice anyone has about particular subdivisions, making the move, building a house, transporting pets, etc. Feel free to email me at sunnhippie@hotmail.com
ALOOOOHHHAAAA! (and Mahalo! for this forum)

Hey Kim,

Do you by any chance know Ken Kanter? I know he's heavily involved in the zoo on Oahu. Just curious...
