...are now protecting us by writing parking tickets for the residents who park along the streets, our private roads, even if it is for short periods it seems.
It has happened to more than one person.
Is this a program to harass the residents in residence and drive them out?
Have they ticketed all the media and other's vehicles that were jamming up the end of Kahukai while watching and reporting on the fireworks this evening?
It has created quite a stir on Nextdoor Leilini.

Is this parking happening as a direct consequence of a federally recognized major natural disaster? If so, and there isn't a legally viable alternative within a reasonable distance, then you can contest those tickets in court. I would imagine you would win.

The persons that were issued the parking tickets were property owners inside LE.
They are private roads.
For all intent and purposes they are party owner of those streets.
We are not under martial law.
Next thing, they'll be writing tickets because we're parking in our driveways.
This looks to be a case of one officer overstepping his mandate.
He supposedly told one of the recipients that a judge ordered it, then would not reveal who the judge was.
I'm inclined to believe this is a case of something I have seen before, an officer coming down with a "god complex", thinking he can make decisions as he sees fit.
It seems that an awful lot of Leilani residents also think that may be the case.

I hope these are challenged in court. County Code stipulates that any "parking prohibition" requires "official signs erected giving notice thereof" (24-197a) or that the "streets or portions thereof be described in 24-281" (24-197b).
Very few streets in Puna have actual parking restrictions, and they're in "obvious" places (near a school, in a commercial district), all of which are also "public" roads.

Definitely put this idea in front of a judge...

Have fun in Traffic Court. I surmise any parking tickets issued in the Evacuation Zone will be tossed out!

While you are correct, don't these people have enough to do without having to deal with this kind of crap?
Nevermind fighting the ticket. Everyone who received one should file a complaint against the author of the ticket and/or the authority that directed this action for harassment and intentional infliction of emotional distress. It's times like these that make me wish I was an attorney. If I was I would take this on contingency and make sure that everyone who was ticketed received a handsome settlement along with some terminations. Might even do it pro bono.

don't these people have enough to do
Excellent point -- if they have time to write parking tickets, then they could probably make do with less staff, which would lower the "massive cost overruns" that are forcing the latest "need" for tax increases (latest estimate: $7M).

Has the media become aware of these tickets? If not, they should be made so immediately. On those rare occasions when the local authorities have been held accountable for such outrageous behavior, it has taken press involvement to make it happen.

Well, I meant don't the residents have enough to do, but I guess it works the other way too. Good point.
