Time to begin discussing Puna lava viewing site
#71
All I have seen is this: https://www.facebook.com/groups/hawaiitr...623051089/

Public Lava Viewing in the works!

A public lava viewing area off of Highway 132 near the Y intersection with Pohoiki road is in the works. This is excellent news and would provide a huge boost for not only local businesses that have struggled, but businesses island wide.

In this location, you can see an almost completely unobstructed view of fissure 8 and it's raging fountain. Also you can see the lava river heading out towards Kapoho.

Have a great night everyone!

I don't know if that's real but note the number of positive vs negative responses. Can there be any doubt that there is a need for this?
I went to NYC a few months after 911 and they had already built a viewing platform for Ground Zero. The city was very glad to have tourists back.

So, critics, throw out a figure for us. 3 weeks until the disaster status can be downgraded so the community can begin re-engaging?

Who knows what three weeks will bring? A critic!? You?! And where exactly are these tourists going to stay?

Probably folks could watch a three hour YouTube documentary on Stalingrad during WW2 if Katrina isn’t enough perspective...

Cheers,
Kirt

According to the Trib, there are no plans to build a lava viewing site right now.

"As for whether a legal public viewing area could be established, Hawaii County officials say that has been discussed, but they aren’t making any promises."

"re-engaging"??? Um... In what exactly? Just like magically going back to their homes, farms and jobs like nothing happened? I guess that just hits a nerve after seeing what incredible loss and sadness so many of my neighbors, friends and others in our community are going through right now.

KGMB news tonight ran a segment tonight stating that officials are pursuing the matter of a lava viewing site. The segment showed footage of the lava river in its full glory. Ikaika Marzo, co-owner of Kalapana Cultural Tours, commented on the widespread desire of people to view this beautiful sight.

The Trib article provided by Tom (above) citing officials' hesitation is probably the more accurate story. Protracted deliberation about important decisions is the order of the day in Hawaii County.

If the viewing site opens, protestors might emerge. Let's hope such activities will be confined to sign waving (at most), and not giving tourists and locals coming to see the lava overt bad vibes.

Well, yeah, you can't open a lava viewing site without at least an EIS.

I bet that's true. Don't EISs take at least 6 months? Maybe the viewing site will be set up and the lava river will run 1 or 2 more days and then Pau.

That would be somewhat of an embarrassment. I bet the national media would get chuckle out of that.

Seeing the lava river footage on the news every day, I think some folks are a little jaded by it. I don't think people fully realize what an extraordinary natural phenomenon it is. We have had fountains before, but this lava river is something else.

IMO it ranks with a total solar eclipse. The birth of new land. For all the damage the lava has done to people's homes, there will be a void when the fountain and river stop.

IMO its just too unpredictable right now. I don't believe there is such a thing as a stable fissure. And a Hot air balloon in the Trade winds doesn't sound very safe either. When this eruption is over there will be lots of Tourists coming to see the aftermath. Best plan for that.
One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.
