2018 Hurricane Season

A hurricane has never reached the Big Island before, correct? Iselle was downgraded just before hitting. I wonder if that is about to change.
I assume that only counts if the eye passes somewhere over the island.

Considering the effects of Iselle whether it was a class hurricane when it made landfall is really just a case of semantics.

Records for Hawaii are very slim prior to 60 years ago... & most likely there WAS a hurricane in the 1871 that hit Hawaii Island, based on the documented (Hawaiian language newspaper accounts) evidence... AND the 1800`s there were also reports (only 2nd-3rd hand) of an earlier 1800`s hit in Kau...
& older olelo tell of fierce battles between wind & sea, which could indicate very severe storms had been present in pre-recorded history...

Here is this morning's satellite image of hurricane Lane. Look at the extent of the outer bands, especially north and east of the eye where we (Puna) most likely will find ourselves. The dense clouds can carry a great deal of moisture, and assuming the storm passes west of Big Island, it's still projected at that time to remain a hurricane, so even outer bands will have strong gusty winds.

Looking at the wind speed probabilities I see a tiny speck of green for part of Puna in that band of yellow. That looks odd to me.

So far the east side is still outside the "cone of uncertainty" with less than 48 hours out. Like Elysianwort said...plenty of rain and thunder and maybe some gusty winds. I wouldn't want to be on the Kona side.

Just an uneducated guess but I'm not expecting much activity on the East side. Worst case scenario for the East side, and all the islands really, is that the storm wallops and damages the ports on Oahu and there is no effective way to unload the big barges from the West Coast.

Does anybody know if the fuel barges that go to the outer islands are dependent on the port facility on Oahu? A friend of mine who works near the ports on Oahu said the fuel barge that was headed to Kauai was turned around, and a friend of mine at Lihue told me 3 gas stations there have ran out of fuel from people gassing up ahead of the hurricane.
