Just an uneducated guess but I'm not expecting much activity on the East side. Worst case scenario for the East side, and all the islands really, is that the storm wallops and damages the ports on Oahu and there is no effective way to unload the big barges from the West Coast.
I'm with you there terracore. My thoughts exactly.

I noticed it, too, and my weather-savvy spouse says that the yellow color offshore indicating higher wind speed is because of no land resistance, while that mauka of us is likely due to the tendency for winds to increase with altitude. For once, Puna might be in a "sweet spot," but it's really too early to tell how it will play out in the event.

Does anybody know if the fuel barges that go to the outer islands are dependent on the port facility on Oahu? A friend of mine who works near the ports on Oahu said the fuel barge that was headed to Kauai was turned around, and a friend of mine at Lihue told me 3 gas stations there have ran out of fuel from people gassing up ahead of the hurricane.
Fuel comes from Barbers point.. which is potentially exposed.

My feeling is that as Lane passes to the South, then West of BI, North Puna should be at least somewhat protected by the mountains, as the winds circulate counter clockwise.
I'm also thinking that the protection will be more than somewhat.
That small green dot pointed out by SoCal seems to confirm my feeling.
The proof is in the puddin'.
I was thinking of trying to get access to our home for the storm to be able to look after it and to deal with any problems just as I have done in past storms, not really believing that our Tin Pot Banana Republic Dictator, Generalissimo Kim would allow it.
My concerns are abating somewhat as Lane develops.
It sure looks as if Maui, Molokai, Oahu and Kauai could take a beating.
You can be sure that if they do, Hawaii's ugly stepchild Puna is very unlikely to see any state money for Generalissimo Kim's grand plan.
Honolulu will become the over riding priority.
Who knows, maybe we can get FEMA over here on every one of the islands.

Just received a telephone warning.
BI has been upgraded to Hurricane warning around the whole island.
No access to Leilani before Friday.
I have my appointment to get in for Friday morning.

All of the spaghetti models now show projected paths west of Big Island. This morning there were still two outliers (models) passing over South Point. Three day probable path takes Hurricane Lane closer to Oahu than any of the other islands, but south and probably at a diminished Catagory 1.

Yes... For once the safest place in Hawaii for a Hurricane is Puna!

Have not confirmed it, but I just heard that Generalissimo Kim has issued another 60 day emergency proclamation.
He will use every excuse he can find to keep as much control as he can.
EDIT:
He's probably hoping a lot of homes in the active zone are damaged so that more people become discouraged are more easily pushed out of their homes.
