I talked to a pahoa pool person about 10 days ago and they were claeaning the pool everyday from the peles hair,He reccomended replace all the water,at a 10 k cost. I have sent several messages
To mayor Kim and asked for them to expedite getting pool back for us all. Please contact him and your reps if you would like it working again. Thanks.

Dan, Pahoa ran the filters & pump May 30 &31, when Pele`s hair & cinder were raining down on the pool... against the logic of many in the aquatics dept.
As of May 30, the park was in contact with USGS personnel & they were advised that by running this through the system, there may have been damage to the pool systems...
Are you sure that all they have to do is replace the water (BTW, during the whole eruption, the pool covers have been safely stowed behind the pool maintenance building...they were never deployed to protect the pool...)
This is the last communications I have heard"

Pool will be closed indefinitely due to hazardous conditions. It's going to take some money to clean the pool, it's filters, and pump system as the debris went through the system. It will take a while to get this pool back to the condition it needs to be once the hazardous conditions are over. Dumping the water more than likely will have to done than thoroughly cleaning the pool and insuring no particles are left behind. Hopefully no damage to the system itself.

More big-time piece of stupidity on the part of a county department. They had pool covers, but couldn't be bothered to deploy them. And don't expect anyone to be held accountable, either.

This is not surprising, considering the complete lack of information on how residents are supposed to deal with Pele's hair. Probably plenty hiding in catchment tanks all over Puna...

Informally I heard that they may try to tag FEMA with the bill....
not sure I really agree that FEMA should pay for their inaction to try to protect the pool.... but.... I have noticed that they are even tacking a Keaau wastewater facility onto the monies they need for lava recovery.... so.... what is adding on the pool & knowing that FEMA was here, why would they try to protect the pool... (Of course, the Keaau wastewater would have nothing to do with the DOH/ EPA stance last year that Keaau is a "Priority 2" wastewater area & would need to upgrade their wastewater treatment for further expansion... not that the land owner with the most to gain from this money grab would be Shipman Ltd...)
