We have two dogs, 12 and 10 lbs, and will travel to the mainland in a few weeks with them. I assume at this size they are too large for under seat and would have to go in cargo. I will research with the airlines (Hawaiian and United I guess) but wondered if anyone here has had experience with this? I have a friend who moved from Hilo to Florida and hired a service that picked up her two large dogs at her house and delivered them to her new home. Finding out who they are and how much that cost, but wondering about traveling on the same flight as us and what it entails. Please no horror stories. I don't need the stress.

United requires you to ship them as cargo, Hawaiian allows you to check them like luggage (cheaper).

Are you bringing them back to Hawaii? Because that's a process and you'll probably have to bring them in via Kona.

My dog flew from California into Hilo on Hawaiian. The brief stop in Honolulu featured a very short once over at the airport pet office. He didn't like the crate, but otherwise painless.

I had a girlfriend with a Dachshund dog that size: 10 to 12 pounds. She contacted the airline and inquired and found out she was able to carry the animal on and put it in her lap the whole flight. Of course that was 7 years ago. But anyway I think she flew Alaskan air.

I looked at the thread title and wondered do dogs really fly? Then I thought they’d be pretty warn out once they got to the mainland.

Terracore--one way, we're moving back to the mainland and I'm trying to get all my ducks (or in this case, dogs) in a row.
SUPER worried about our puppers of course.
Turns out my friend wasn't 100% happy with the dog shipping company - Dogs arrived ok, but no one was there to pick them up for over and hour while they waited in their crates in the baggage area.
I do know that to go in the cabin, their carrier has to be able to fit under the seat in front of you, and I BELIEVE - still checking on details - they have to be able to stand upright with room betw. head and top of crate.

What happens when you bring them back to the islands? Do you have to go through all that rabies quarantine stuff?

If you have all your proof of rabies vaccinations etc I don’t think there are any quarantines except home quarantines these days. We’re traveling one-way — Hawaii rules won’t be an issue.

We shipped our dogs to the mainland (Florida) about a year ago with Air Animal Pet Movers and were very happy with this service. We had to leave earlier to close on our new home, so the dogs stayed at Barking Dog, and they delivered them to Hilo airport to begin their journey. There were several stops and plane changes for the dogs, but Air Animal had folks at each airport stop to meet the dogs and take them for a walk, etc. They even sent us email updates along the way. When the dogs arrived in Florida, they were met at the airport and we paid extra to have them delivered directly to our house. Air Animal set up all the flights, paperwork, etc.
All of this was not cheap, but with the other stresses of moving, etc., it was nice to know that the dogs were being taken care of. They arrived just fine after their LONG 20 something hour journey.
