I'm not sure what septics have to do with the topic, Kalakoa. Can you explain a bit more what you're thinking? Typically regions that do allow mobile homes require an approved wastewater system to be installed before the mobile home can be legally moved to a property.

I don't think that even 'off grid' home owners should be 'pooping in the woods'. That's just nasty. [xx(] magine if everyone thought that way? It isn't all that difficult to get a decent compost toilet situation going or even a cesspool if a person is breaking all the rules anyway.

I didn't raise the point, but: anything "used for habitation" must be connected to an "approved wastewater disposal".

It's not a matter of "allowing" mobile ("manufactured") homes, it's just a permitting issue, and (as noted above) the scales are tipped here so prefab isn't cheaper or easier.

Sorry, Kalakoa! I meant to address that to Lolo. Yes, approved wastewater disposal can be regular pumping, approved blackwater, or approved composting. As I understand it, mobile homes are not allowed to be permitted throughout Hawaii. The only time I see anything remotely like a prefab trailer home is for a temporary shelter on construction sites.

mobile homes are not allowed to be permitted throughout Hawaii

Section 25-4-10. Mobile dwellings.
All mobile dwellings shall conform to the County building code (chapter 5 of this Code), and the Public Health Housing Code (chapter 2 of the State public health regulations), except:
(1) When parked in a licensed mobile home park; or
(2) When occupied for dwelling or sleeping purposes outside of a licensed mobile home park for less than thirty days in any one location.

Section 6-27 outlines the requirements for a mobile home park license.

There's also the mobile homes that are actually out there in the wild. If these were "not allowed", how did they get shipped here?

Has anyone been tracking housing for those who’s homes were destroyed. There was something about a shipman subdivision like 10 years down the line. but no other word about what happened to the people.

Right, Kalakoa. But can you name a single licensed 'Mobile Home Park' in Hawaii? Pretty sure there isn't one. So they are kept to the temporary status when they are shipped over, which isn't very often at all because it is cost prohibitive for something that can never be used more than 30 days at a time.

Are we talking apples and apples here? There is actually two kinds of "mobile homes" these days. The "mobile home" in the 60's type trailer park have been redesignated as "manufactured" home, while the "mobile home" status remained with travel trailers up to 5th wheel size with popouts.
The manufactured home has two or three segments bolted together onsite over a foundation or pier arrangement, and the tongue and axles removed and put under for storage. It's construction is approved by the State Architect, as it meets all Building Codes and the electrical, propane, sewage connections are governed by the Building Department.
There is a subdivision of these on Kauai in Port Allen, so if no can, must be a County issue to discuss, as there are models available that rival Honsidor and HPM!
