Nov 2018 Election - OHA Candidates
#1
OHA Oahu Resident Trustee Candidates:

Kalei Akaka
7. Do you support the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope atop Mauna Kea?

This is an extension of our voyaging culture, using the stars, the universe and nature to reconnect with our sisters and brothers around the world. Ancient Hawaiians were forward thinking and for advancement to experience what lies beyond the horizon.

While honoring the spiritual significance that is Hawaii, this is the educational opportunity for our children of today and tomorrow, in which we bring together the ancient culture and wayfinding traditions of Hawaii with state-of-the-art technologies and expand on our knowledge of the stars and universe, as we voyage into the future.

I do not believe Mauna Kea is being properly managed, and I believe that Native Hawaiians should have a greater say in such management and determining the future of Mauna Kea... At that time, title and management of Mauna Kea should be transferred to the Native Hawaiian government entity after negotiations with the state of Hawaii.

That sounds like "no". If the answer is "no", just say "no".

I believe that TMT and Native Hawaiians can co-exist on Mauna Kea.

The issue is not about the TMT … It goes deeper than that... When the state goes in and just dismantles an ahu with disrespect, of course this will stir strong emotions from its indigenous people, the Native Hawaiians. Let us sit down, talk about the “real” issue here … not just the “construction” of the TMT.

Yes, what I do not support is UH’s mismanagement of our resources.

7. Do you support the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope atop Mauna Kea?

As a sitting trustee, it’s prudent for me to support the board’s current official position of being “neutral” on the subject of the TMT.

I also believe that Native Hawaiians should be part of the discussion on how the mountain is managed. To that end, I think that OHA’s current lawsuit against the state of Hawaii, University of Hawaii, and DLNR for neglecting to manage Mauna Kea properly is a good start.

I support a true management policy when it comes to the use of highly sensitive resources such as Mauna Kea, Haleakala and Mauna Loa, which are cultural properties that have a sense of character which also represents the unique qualities of Hawaii Nui and its people.

TMT: The motion for language to include both “rescind” and “oppose” was proposed by Trustee Carmen “Hulu” Lindsey of Maui.

You remember Faye. Censured by the body that she served under. Some people, (Faye) have no shame. I wonder if she's still collecting those checks.

HOTPE - would you mind changing the subject of this thread? I think it would be better as "Nov 2018 elections: OHA candidates".

Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion TomK.
I had planned to post links & info for the Constitutional Convention & proposed Amendments here as well (hence the generic thread title) but perhaps when I get around to that I’ll put them in a separate thread.

Sounds like the lyrics from HMS Pinafore:

Sir Joseph.
I grew so rich that I was sent
By a pocket borough into Parliament.
I always voted at my party's call,
And I never thought of thinking for myself at all.

Chorus.
He never thought of thinking for himself at all.

Sir Joseph.
I thought so little, they rewarded me
By making me the Ruler of the Queen's Navee!

Very good, BillyB!

I've not been following this, but as for one of the OHA candidates up for re-election, this is certainly an interesting read:

https://www.civilbeat.org/2018/10/chad-b...-the-line/

"Akana, who has served on the OHA Board of Trustees since 1990 — longer than any other trustee — is charged by Dan Gluck, executive director of the Hawaii State Ethics Commission, with accepting prohibited gifts, failure to report the acceptance of gifts and using her office for personal benefit. Her attorneys at Bickerton Dang reject the claims."
