Sorry dan, but this is relevant. Glinda is representative of the simpleminded view of some people who think there is a bag containing a billion dollars somewhere that can be spent on whatever they want. Actually it either gets spent on a telescope here or it gets spent on a telescope somewhere else. Which do you think would be better for Hawaii and ALL of its people?

Please don't be swayed by HOTPE's politicking, look at the information.. study each candidate. Kalei Akaka.. whose family name lends to her a lot.. is nowhere near as qualified as her opponent Esther Kia'aina. who actually has the background and connections to represent OHA on this and all other issues.

connections to represent OHA
Excellent point glinda.
When we look at OHA, what has it accomplished since 1978, with the constant infighting, the backstabbing, the lawsuits over who gave money to their cuz, who used their position to gain sexual favors, who approved highly overpriced contracts for people with connections - - do we really want more of that?
Or is it time for the old guard to step aside, away from the money pile, and finally allow someone new, with a fresh outlook and management style to take over the reins of an organization so disfunctional, most of the trustees are seemingly unable to recognize whether a telescope can or cannot have a direct negative impact on their constituents, the Hawaiian people. If the telescope is really an issue, shouldn’t the discussion eventually move beyond who is for and against, like we’re watching a Rainbow Warriors football game?
It’s time for a change. A long overdue transformation of OHA.

Otherwise it sure does seem like "selective outrage" that magically only happens where billions of dollars are involved.
Of course it's selective outrage: if a billion dollars wasn't involved, how could you hold the project hostage so as to extort as much as possible from the proponents.
And HOTPE, your whole focus is too narrow - the reform needs to happen from the top to the bottom of Hawaii's State government. Quickly, now, name three State agencies (or one County agency) that comes to mind as being well managed and properly administered... I won't hold my breath...

Actually HOTPE I think Esther Kia'aina's experience having worked in both the state and federal level, in DLNR and the Interior Dept, give her far more potential to do exactly what you suggest. To reach beyond all the incestuous humbug and get on with the matter at hand. I have no idea why you keep promoting someone that has no experience and then suggest that they would be a good leader over one that has plenty that is actually tailored to the job at hand.

You're right of course. The State and County are dysfunctional and did throw a wrench in the TMT's machinery, but I wanted the focus on this thread aimed at what I considered the (slightly) worst offender - - OHA. There's only so many hours in the day.

I've told you why. I believe she will represent the vast majority of Native Hawaiian people, not a vocal minority. She has a clarity of purpose, and can see that cathartic emotional outrage will not provide the homes, schools, doctors, and jobs the Hawaiian people want.
Sometimes the squeaky wheel gets the grease. OHA has been greasing the wheels since 1978, and not much more. Time for a change.

Get caught in a bald-faced lie, just ignore it. You and The Don are brothers from different mothers.
I support astronomy but not telescopes, what a crock.
I wish Ms Akaka the best of luck, she gets my vote. How is it that we get to vote for Oahu’s representative?

Both what? You’re against telescopes, can’t do much astronomy without them.

There’s still hope for you. Stop the racism, stop the lying. We forgive you.

No, I’m not crazy, glinda aka dakine has gone and deleted his foulmouthed posts again. I forgive him.
