I have quite a bit of wood left over from construction that I need to get rid of. Mixed cedar and Hi-Bor material. I have a friend who would like to chip it and use it for mulch.
Rather than separating it into types of wood, does anyone know if Hi-Bor is toxic to plants? I don't think that it is. Diluted boric acid can be used as an eyewash. It might take a long time to break-down, but that really doesn't matter to him.
If I do need to separate, what is the closest place to dump the Hi-Bor scrap and is there a charge?

Depending on the size, the Keaau transfer station might be the best option. I think they won't take scrap lumber larger than 4 feet long though.

I disagree with Pam - Hi-bor doesnt have arsenic in it - the old CCA did.

From the MSDS, it pretty much sounds like inhaling the saw dust is the big issue. I would suggest that if you do use it for mulch you were a mask while you mulch and then use the mulch for only ornamental vegetation.

Hi-Bor contains Boron which is very definitely toxic to plants in excess, which is not very much. I do not know how much is available in Hi-Bor treated wood, but it is NOT worth taking a chance.
Use it or dispose of it properly, but DO NOT turn it into mulch.

Construction scrap has to go to the landfill in Hilo. The people at the transfer station will get all up tight if you try. I just took a load down last week in a 4x6 trailer. It cost $41.00. If you have time you could put the smaller stuff in heavy-duty leaf bags and dump them with your household garbage and they won’t know. Please don’t ask me why I know.

Royall - I would never assume the worst of you...
My guess is 52 gallon 5 mil HeftyBags hold a lot of 'household refuse' JUST fine. But double bagging might be required to keep some of those 'rigid containers' from poking thru.

Toucano, HD has “contractor’s” bags at $14.00 a box. Some of those “ridged” containers do poke through a little but you just need to go to the dump chute furthest from the attendant.
