Just tried to call friends in Anch.
Apparently, phone service is out. Call can't go through. I'll try an email. Even if it can't go through, it should sit there until they can check. Sounds like they might have had a hard time eating their jello this morning. Watching the news link above, all the references to other quakes were to California quakes. Not once was the '64 quake mentioned. It was even stronger, 9.0 I believe, and tore Anch. up much more, as well as much of the South Central region. Makes me glad I'm in Paradise where we only have lava flows to worry about. Yeah, yeah, I know, HI gets EQs too. But, in 5 years, I've only felt one REAL EQ, the recent 6.1. Even then, it wasn't all that bad, just the most noticeable I've felt since coming here. If Kim was Anchorage's mayor He'd probably put a mandatory evacuation out for the entire municipality. EDIT: Only a few weeks ago I read: The Great Quake: How the Biggest Earthquake in North America Changed Our Understanding of the Planet - Henry Fountain About the '64 quake.

Big earth movements afoot:
https://www.nationalgeographic.com/scien...h-geology/ Strange waves rippled around the world, and nobody knows why Instruments picked up the seismic waves more than 10,000 miles away—but bizarrely, nobody felt them. "These slow types of quakes are often associated with volcanic activity. At the Mount Nyiragongo volcano in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a similar slow earthquake and low-frequency waves were linked with a magma chamber collapsing. Slow quakes were also stunningly frequent during the most recent fiery run of Kilauea in Hawaii, which produced nearly 60 of these events between May and the end of July, sending seismic waves around the world."

The Great Alaska Quake of 2018
Couldn't get through by phone so I emailed friends. They live up on Hillside, very close to the state park boundary. Tried calling yesterday but phones were down¸ probably because of the call volume. I’ll bet it was a bit of a chore trying to catch your breakfast jello. From the reports of how people fared, I’m assuming you folks came through OK. Hope you guys saw no no bodily injury or property damage. Gimme a report. Our best to you, ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hi. Well I guess its my turn for a big mother nature event. We are fine and no big damage to the house, just have to replace a 1000 year old toilet, bolts rusted through and the shaking finished the job. Not a big deal, we were lucky I was watching the news, K's at work in the XXXXX bldg.NN floors tall (she works on the 3rd floor), and it started mild and progressed to violent shaking. We, me and Sam [their dog], never got up just sat and wondered when or if it would quit before the house came down. Funny that I was so focused that I didn't even see or hear all the stuff crashing around us. Pictures twisted, a few vases hit the floor, other misc stuff. No structural damage, no gas issues, power was off for a few hours (already prepared to go camping in the house, plenty wood for fireplace, generator ready - good times #128512, then the power came back on. Back to normal here. Now just the clean up. That was my side. K's building shook pretty hard but all ended up ok. She was on the ground floor having a muffin break. They huddled until the shaking stopped and .............. then the thundering herd from the upper floors started pouring into the lobby. Crying, scared, and fixing to bust out the front door and K stopped them by yelling and wouldn't let them out (14 floors of falling glass and who knows what else). Seems most wanted to get to their cars in the 6 level concrete parking garage, good idea to help weed out the gene pool. After a bit all calmed and no more panic. Now everyone is heading or trying to get home from all over town, imagine that traffic jam and it was really that bad, so I hear, never left the house. Took K several hours to get home but it was ok. She was shaken and we had some severe aftershocks that didn't help. Funny thing about the workers K stopped from going outside. Sheep is what I'm thinking. One panics and all follow. Stop the lead one (like K did) and they all stop and start milling about #128017;. I say - lead follow or get outa the way. I think now the count is >185 aftershocks and we are still getting them. Question is - are these small ones leading up to another big one. No one knows but USGS says the aftershocks could go on for a while. The old wait and see game. As you know, just normal when you live in the ring of fire. Don't know whats worst. Not knowing when the next quake will happen or riding a little ways and seeing the lava flowing close. At least ours didn't keep us in suspense, boom it happened and then its gone. Glenn hwy going to the valley had overpass issues, sink holes along the hwy. All traffic leaving town was stopped at eagle river and funneled thru ER to the old glenn and on to the valley. Talk about a traffic jam, took some people 6-7hrs to get to the valley. Oh I should mention, while all the workers all over town were jamming the roads over the radio comes the announcement from the school district - all schools are closed would you please come get your children. Talk about up scaling an already nasty traffic situation, what are you gonna do, me? I'm not leaving the house. Lots of damage to structures the closer you get into town. AM radio stations were keeping people informed of gas stations still open and road and structure closures. Very good coverage by EMS. In total its hard to say where paradise for retirees is. Lets see, do you want wildfires, lava flows, floods, hurricanes, or just a mag 7 quake. Just a thought........ Well I think that about covers the big one of 2018 and I was there (bragging rights). Wonder what tomorrow will bring........ Hope all is well. See ya
