Pacific Spaceport in Keaau?
#41
Is there any environment that isn't declared to be "delicate"?

yes there is, it's "fragile..." Always one or the other... never seen robust, or resilient, ...

I have only questioned whether or not this is the best site location out of our 4000 square miles of Hawaii island and the proposed launch site wouldn’t be in my backyard but almost ten miles away.

How about those SpaceX launches that RETURN BACK TO THE LAUNCH PAD, all by themselves in an area of much larger populations? The SpaceX rockets are also many times larger than what is proposed for here.

Obie quoted Ruderman:

“I know few details about it at this point. But generally, all previous proposals for a ‘spaceport’ and rocket-launch facilities have died of their own stupidity. This is not the place for such, because we have a delicate environment, and our state is already populated!

Once again, someone is asking Hawaii to embrace a technology that does not even exist! Someone wants us to be the suckers, er, I mean guinea pigs, for an unproven, unsafe project."

I don't know where that quote came from, but if it's true, it seems to be typical Ruderman; construct a false argument against science. He did a similar thing with GMOs claiming his "expert", a yogic flyer whose only qualification was in dancing, shouldn't be questioned. The County Council sucked it up.

As much as I understand objections to a launch facility in Puna, it would be nice if our representatives didn't make stuff up. It makes everyone here look backward - and you can interpret that how you like, I mean it in two ways.

As a sailor since I was ten, I learned early in life never to pee into the wind, which is exactly what Alaska Aerospace wants to do here launching on the windward side of the island into the tradewinds.

I’m not against a rocket launch facility, but it should be downwind on the south west coast of the island as the predominate tradewinds come from the north east so that everything flies offshore over the ocean.

Why risk having any debris or rocket fuel pollution rain down on our community and agricultural crops? Common sense. Some are exaggerating my position here and twisting it into something it’s not.

Launch direction is based on the earth's rotation, not low-level winds. Common sense.

I guess that’s why the Navy sited the the Pacific Missile Range Facility on the south west leeward side of Kauai. But what do they know?

Here's a launch from Barking Sands with a UH payload. You can see it's a smaller size rocket:

Read between the lines of this response from Mayor Kim:

The county encourages the identification of opportunities to build upon a fully integrated economy that benefits a diversity of local businesses, residents and the environment.

Opportunity has been identified; nothing more need be done.
