My beloved old Mac Pro died last night after a long illness and I'm looking to replace her with a 2017 27" iMac. I'll need after-market upgrades, dual boot system, perhaps new graphics card and more RAM. I used to go to Troy at Super Geeks in Hilo but they are now closed. If you are very competent and reliable please email me at: kalianna1@gmail.com.

I bought a new iMac this last fall and am very disappointed with it. All of my older dependable software is gone and replaced with lesser quality programs that do not interrelate well. There is no disc drive.... so burning CDRs is out.
So now I have to maintain two desktops to do what one used to do. The new one is to keep up with internet advances as the old one is no longer supported by Apple. The old one is to allow me access to the last 20+ years of my files as the new one is not compatible with older files.
Good luck.

I had to have my new computer shipped directly to my old Mac guru in WA. Since I got free shipping to his place, I only had to pay the freight to Hawaii. It's a real shame we have to resort to tactics like this. The Mac place on Kilauea I would dis recommend after they worked on my dying Mac book pro.

Rob, you pretty much sum up my situation. I've done a fair amount of research and you can still buy Snow Leopard (10.6) via the Mac store and an Apple Care rep told me it should run on all the newer machines. I'll be partitioning the disk and using the old OSX for image work using my old software and the new OSX for internet, email, etc. I've spoken to Apple and they say no problem. SSD or HD is better than new Fusion drive because only one partition can use the faster flash portion of the drive, sort of defeating the purpose. Now I just have to come up with the money. Just...
ETA: And Radiopeg, I'm surprised you had problems. Is this Supergeeks you're talking about? Troy was great, tried numerous fixes, very patient and knowledgable, reasonable prices. It's Supergeeks closure that has prompted my search for someone else.

Supergeeks you're talking about? No, the Mac Made Easy place.

Aha. they've refused to fix anything I brought to them--too old and not supported. They've been quite helpful on giving advice and options about getting a new machine though.

You can pick up a used Mac with snow leopard on eBay rather cheaply. Probably cheaper than a repair.

My PC can run any version of Windows, Linux, or even a Mac emulator, selectively, all using the same hardware / hard drive. And I can upgrade/do repairs myself.
Just FYI, in case you want to buy something cheaper.
Rob, I don't know about Macs, I imagine they are comparable, but you can get an external USB CD/DVD read/writer for about $20. I have one, they work just as good as the internal variety.

I have tried a few things and discovered there is a difference between working and working smoothly.
But thank you for the suggestion.

And thank you terracore but for software compatibility I'll have to stay with a mac. I'm trying to find a recent used model through Gazelle but so far no luck. There's a few being sold locally but haven't checked them out. Just don't feel comfortable doing ebay for something this big.
