end food stamps and require people to stand on their own two feet

I suppose we should end all other subsidies as well. Farmers should stand on their own two feet, and the energy companies too. I imagine you'd like to end them all, right?

A real no handouts here kind of guy. A true to the bone everyone should stand on their own American. So I imagine you wouldn't have the government run at a deficit either. I mean come on, Uncle Sam himself is a welfare queen.

Or were you more concerned with just the folks that actually need some help?

I pulled this quote from an article about Baghdad.... seems to apply here too.

"Job creation is also a major demand, but political blocs have chosen to fatten an already bloated public sector instead of growing the private sector."
Assume the best and ask questions.

End them all, farm subsidies as well. Then Sam wouldn't be a Welfare Queen anymore.

PS "Need" does not justify taking, against their will, from others, be it under color of "law", or otherwise. Such is NOT "charity", but theft incognito!!!

Is there anybody on Punaweb who would have NOTHING left if gas taxes are increased by $33 a year?
--------
Sounds OK until you realize that the result will cost everyone much more than that! All food and goods will go up in price due to the extra shipping costs, plus GET also goes up on the increased costs! This kind of tax increase hurts the poor way more than you think. Taxes upon taxes. It is the Democrat way.

Do you know the barrel price of oil dropped like a rock over the past year? Not by looking at the pump price of gas in Hawaii you wouldn’t. Just think, if the unnamed fossil fuel affiliated party and the corporate supporters who keep them in power passed those real savings on to customers - - think how much that would help the poor with their gas purchases and the price they pay for increased delivery fees on every product they have to buy.

Now that’s something to complain about.

Oil companies profit about 7 cents on a gallon of gas. Hawaii gas tax is over 65 cents per gallon. And the corporations are the "thief" in this scheme?

ETA: How many states have less public roadways than Hawaii? In "theory", we should have one of the lowest gas taxes in the nation, because we don't have very many miles of road. It's not like we are building new islands to drive to. Instead, they are looking to increase taxes on something we already pay one of the highest amount of taxes on. This is not about "need" or "corporate greed", it's about political greed and malfeasance.

Don’t confuse profit at the pump with profit before the oil and gas gets to the pump. Some headlines from last year, 2018:

* Big Oil's most profitable quarter ever: $51.5 billion
* Nov 2, 2018 · Quarterly profits for the world's largest publicly traded oil and gas company surged 57 percent to $6.24 billion.

When you or I or delivery companies fill up at a gas pump in Hilo or Pahoa, we are paying dollars more per tank to Big Oil, not just pennies more to Big State Government, because Big Oil raises prices when the price of oil goes up, but never lowers it at the same rate when prices go down. That equals gigantic profits.

If you think the state is gouging poor people, they’re just pikers compared to Big Oil. I watch wholesale and retail fuel prices like a hawk, because my shippers use fuel surcharges on top of the negotiated rates.

"Big Oil" is a commodity, as such, violent price swings are more the result of traders than the oil companies. People who buy/sell/trade oil futures aren't required to take possession of the oil. The price of extracting oil from the ground varies little day by day, and neither do "big oil" profits. $51.5 billion dollars is not a lot of profit when you are talking about the most traded commodity in the history of the world.

Solyndra took a half billion dollars from US taxpayers and delivered zero green energy for our collective effort. Meanwhile, the Hawaii government feeds off the teat of petroleum taxes.

Well, then, I suppose no matter which way the poor turn in Hawaii, they’re getting shafted either by government or private enterprise. Perhaps Wilbur Ross can make some recommendations for lower income residents of Puna on how they can offset their disproportionately high expenses through prudent stock investments in petroleum companies or tax free municipal bonds issued by the city and county of Honolulu. Or why don’t they just get a loan?
