This is completely untrue and no, the Atacama is not the backup site and not the most likely place it will be built since two large telescopes are already being built there.

And the ELT will be the largest optical telescope in the world, not the TMT.

The footprints are not even close.

TMT's footprint is less than 70,000 sq ft.
Houston Astrodome is just under 400,000 sq ft.


Maybe alohanaia meant "taller", but that might not even be true?

TMT is projected to be nearly 18 stories high.
Astrodome is 18 stories high.

But those pesky stories can be anything from 9-25 feet--again a bit fuzzy.

TMT is projected to be 180 feet tall.
Astrodome is 183 feet tall (25 feet below street level and 208 feet above playing field level).

Since TMT is projected to be built at 13,290 ft elevation, it would top out at 13,470 ft. That is 332 ft lower than the summit at 13,802 ft. (You could almost fit the height of two Houston Astrodomes in the gap.)

Too bored to estimate the volume.

In any case, it is quite disingenuous to claim that "The building is larger than the Houston Astrodome."

I’ve got one. Is the TMT bigger than DHHL’s storage facility filled with applications submitted by Hawaiians who wait endlessly on a Homeland property?

Wait, one more. If you stacked up the applications made by Hawaiians for a Homeland lease, starting at sea level, would they tower above the height of the TMT when completed?

And while grafty politicians love bloaty go nowhere construction projects, the sad reality is there is little commitment to fund the subsequent operation of science projects.

The international funding is there for the TMT. Are you suggesting “they” would build the TMT and then subsequently abandon it? Are you saying the TMT is “a bloaty go nowhere construction project”?

To my eyes the grafty politicians are turning a blind eye as far as support for the TMT goes. Not a single one has come out forcefully in favor of doing what is needed to get construction going. Why they don’t is just sad, and I can find no humor in it.
