Hmm lets hear some more arguments from you guys that think going organic and steering clear of all those dangerous chemicals ISN'T the pono thing to do for our aina?

The safest place in East Hawaii, entirely free of lead, arsenic and chlordane is now the recent lava flow in the LERZ. Any dangerous chemicals are under 30+ feet of lava. But the county won’t let anyone live there. Instead, they’ve pre-approved new subdivisions on Shipman land, old sugar cane fields probably loaded with lead, arsenic and chlordane.

Arsenic - Hepticlor and a host of other toxic cancer causing toxins are from the cane haul days where mine the top soil for lawns and such when the school grounds need the soil for their grounds or ball fields.
Look around Kea'au n shipmans bull dozing all for papaya .All HIGHLY toxic soils and who will be eating those TOXIC papayas in a year half to 3 years out from the chemical ferts n Round Up for weed control.
AmFAC lands B4 dat .
Nothing new to see here - move along boys n girls - move along.

Given all those links I'm not sure there really is a place here where going organic is going to help.

TomK - just in ones own garden .

Well, that's OK if you know your garden is clear of arsenic or if you don't care and not selling your produce.

Seriously, if you grow anything on contaminated ground, it doesn't matter if it's organic or not, contamination applies to both. The question is if the arsenic and other contaminants have been removed or not. Turning this into an argument supporting organic farming seems ridiculous to me.

Wow! Arsenic?

I’m convinced now EW, anything you’ve ever said about organic must be right. The connection is clear and unwavering - because of arsenic contamination everyone should switch to organic and probably stop using round up also. Thanks for sharing, I literally might have died without this post.

I don't see any connection between roundup and old arsenic . Anyway my acre of lava land in Eden Roc is probably free of arsenic since it was impossible to farm.

Ok I'll be so kind as to enlighten you to the connection:
From the link: "Felton said that makes sense because of how the chemicals were used historically, including lead paint on the sides of buildings, arsenic used as an herbicide"

Ok so they are both herbicides. Each generation uses some toxic chemical on the soil as a shortcut to kill weeds because certain people want to make lots of money with mass agricultural production and take shortcuts on hard work.

And each subsequent generation discovers that the said chemicals are actually awful for the land and the people living on said land, even though the government previously said they are "safe" to use. DDT, Arsenic, maybe Roundup, whats next?

My take from this? Well, don't believe a damn thing the government tells you and don't use the supposed chemicals in farming.

Go on ahead and scoff and joke rainyjim. Pretend like that toxic stuff is okay for the land. I know that you know better and are more educated than that.

Turning this into an argument supporting organic farming seems ridiculous to me.

I feel lucky I live on land that wasn't once a sugarcane field so I don't have to worry about arsenic as much.

Edited to add this for our PW scientist:
The fact that so many people cannot see the connection between this and a loud and clear reason to promote organic farming seems ridiculous to me.

chemicals are actually awful for the land and the people living on said land... DDT, Arsenic, maybe Roundup,

You are combining two different arguments, long term affects and short term affects.
Lead (Pb) and arsenic (As) are elements that won’t break down.
Roundup and DDT will over time.
