I will miss the little restaurant on the corner and having breakfast outside, was one of the things I looked forward to when we move back and I used to love Lemon Grass's food. They were remodeling in Mar when I was there. Are you sure about Costco?

Costco in Puna? That would be a very big draw to pull my partner into this. This comment is intended solely to put this thread above the one that is presently below it!

I can make no promises about Costco certainly. Word comes from the guy who worked on grading the property for them just this last few weeks. They had tried to go in across from Home Depot but ran into escalating building costs because of the boom last year and decided to build on Kauai first. That project is done. the location makes sense; it pulls not only all of Hilo but HPP on the way home. In terms of traffic patterns, they couldn't find a better location. The local grocery stores are gonna feel the hurt big time. It will be interesting.
I know we don't want to become Little Honolulu but Costco could really be nice for us. Get us a Lowes and I may never go to Kona again!
Time will tell it all I suppose...... woooo hooooooo

I emailed Costco regarding if they plan to build near Hilo or not. If/when they respond I will let the forum know the results.

The last I saw anything in the news about Costco coming to East Hawaii was the piece about construction costs being too high for the property across from Home Depot. I hope Pam is right and the Keaau bypass location comes to pass, but surely we would have heard something in the local press. Wouldn't the building permits be public record? Anybody know how to find out? I can't imagine anything that big going in without the usual brouhaha.

Yes Jerry that is the last I read also. They choose Kauai over Hilo due to costs and population. At the time I did a Google search and did the population numbers for Kona, Hilo and Kauai and I couldn't see where the population numbers came into the equation. Didn't make sense, that was maybe 4 months ago.
I wouldn't eat a Pizza Hut pizza if it were free. Honestly I'm no pizza aficionado but those taste like cardboard. Just my opinion of course, I'd do without or make my own. Or hopefully one day I will get to experience the infamous Punatic Party Fruit Pizza extraordinaire!

Costco on Milo & 130??? Yikes, that would be close! The last I heard at the Shipman meeting, they were looking at getting them to the center they are planning at 11 & 130 (a more practical intersection ofr that amount of traffic). One of our older neighbors said that Pizza Hut also got the Flower Shop (didn't know there was a flower shop!) along with the Hiro's Place shop (boy, they had to put up with the ever leaking, ever being fixed roof! Do miss that great place for a quick breakfast.) Would that give room for a dine in (if anyone has a clue about if/where the flower shop was???)

The flower shop was inside "Puna Fresh Foods" (aka Sure Save) but it was run by someone else. You would have thought it was Sure Save's but it was technically different.

Haven't been to Puna Fresh in for a couple of weeks (full time school really cuts into my social life!) Is this the area adjacent to the old Hiros, that just is kinda there? Are they walling off that area of the store (hasn't really been used all that much). If it is, it still looks small for a Pizza Hut, even Carry out.

the first time i ordered a combination pizza from pizza hut i called them and told them they gave me the wrong one as i couldn't hardly see any stuff on it, so they said they were sorry and gave me a store credit, so the next time i ordered the same thing(for free)but this time i opened it up at the store,.....and it was the same, lol! they serve a great pizza up in volcano village.
