TMT slipping away

but... but.. that would be cultural appropriation... (unless a significant fee was paid, in which case it might be alright...until someone realized that they didn't get their cut...)

"Astronomers visiting the remaining telescopes (which will eventually have to go) shall be required to exhibit proper decorum at all times.

In some sense, that has already happened.

As for the article the OP mentions, I can't say very much as it's behind a paywall, but nothing is new in what's quoted. The TMT want's to be on Mauna Kea but if that can't happen, it has a backup plan. This has been known for a long time now.

Jupiters` marine science center " project already has lots of support from local elected officials, the Kawaihae-area business community, the board of directors of the Pua Ka#699;ilima #699;O Kawaihae Cultural Surf Park, the Nature Conservancy, and Pwo Navigator Chadd Paishon of Na Kalai Wa#699;a."

But, will the support last the duration of the environmental assessments...

lots of support from local elected officials

Didn't TMT have plenty of support? Except that our "elected officials" somehow gave more support to the protectors...

Back during the protests, there was an incident where a couple of observatory staff were "ambushed" while trying to drive to the summit (they were not TMT staff). They called 911 but the incident was not responded to by the police.

A year or two later, there was a meeting between the observatories and police about summit security and police responsibilities. Out of that meeting came the "reassurance" that police must respond to 911 calls, so the then captain of the police was questioned by those staff members why they didn't get a response that day. I witnessed and took part in that discussion. The captain said it was not right and he would look into the incident and tell us what happened.

Despite repeated attempts to get that information from the police, no information has been forthcoming. That probably says enough about what observatory staff expect the next time TMT tries to start construction on Mauna Kea.

Don't kill the messenger here but i see tmt as:

" TMT, bringing down the mountain. "... RWR 03.27.2019

and when u see it on a T-shirt, know u heard it hear first .

TMT insists, protests commence, the need for some kind of permission for the general public will be enabled ( to insure the "safety" of all involved ) .. and will continue ad infinitum. We all lose..

If only that made some kind of sense.
