TMT Construction Can Proceed
#11
The TMT will, of course, bring more cultural practitioners.
---------
I think the construction period will simply create a bunch of fake cultural practitioners...

Here's hoping that the authorities do their duty to arrest and prosecute protesters who break the law. Last time around they used "culturally sensitive" cops who cried while arresting people, and our wimp prosecutor, Mitch Roth, ended up dropping all the charges. At least the cops did their jobs, however reluctantly. Roth did not.

suggest splitting this into two separate threads.

Yes, good suggestion.
When I originally read the Kauai roadblock story I recognized some parallels with the Mauna Kea protests. Then the removal of structures on Mauna Kea happened a few days later, and then the go ahead for the TMT. I think there is a string that links them together, but you’re right, too many potential tangents.

I’ve revised the title and original post, so:

This thread is about the TMT, it’s permits, construction, and protests.

The TMT may take as long as 10 years for its construction. During that time the County of Hawaii will enforce trespassing laws on Saddle Road:

Meanwhile, Big Island Mayor Harry Kim pledged to use county resources to keep protests peaceful.
“I would assume no different than any other time," he said. "This will be to keep the area safe of trespassers or demonstrators in their designated area and I understand that anywhere along Saddle Road is county

Right... The only thing you can be sure of is that Harry will do what's politically expedient... he will keep it peaceful while they block the road...

Given recent events and those that occurred in 2014/2015 I hope you understand that there are things I cannot comment on right now. I and others were supposed to be on the mountain on Thursday but those trips were canceled out of an abundance of caution. It's also very unclear what will happen over the next few days or months.

For those that work on Mauna Kea, I think this article gives a brief summary of their concerns:

I’m happy to see that TMT construction will finally start after all these years, but very concerned about future protests.

I’ve also been concerned about the lack of honoring Hawaiian culture and history on Mauna Kea, which should be respected, and I think that is a problem here.

I would love to see a Hawaiian Cultural Center and Museum across from the Visitor’s Center.

A small concrete seat amphitheater (to withstand winter snow) could also be built at the summit for Hawaiian cultural ceremonies...

Imagine the Merrie Monarch Festival beginning at the summit with a sunrise ceremony.

Now is time to suggest such a project and many Hawaii companies would jump on board with donations. Maybe that could help reduce the tensions and keep the peace on Mauna Kea.

The DLNR NTP states construction will start between now and September 27th, 2019. The latter date is the end of the 2 year deadline to start
construction per the revised CDUP issued in 2017.

The permitting for the TMT isn't completely finalized yet. The Department of Health still has to issue a finalized NPDES permit. Yes, they provisionally extended it five additional years. However, DOH is still reviewing their renewal application. Next Tuesday will be pivotal date, as the DOH will be holding a public hearing in Kona regarding this permit renewal.

Interesting proposals. Concern for native Hawaiian culture is one reason for heavy representation of Polynesian navigation history at the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center. Someone could argue expand that site for additional native Hawaiian topics on Mauna Kea.

Though perhaps their navigation history is to be viewed as completely separate from the theme of their reverence for Mauna Kea.

And we can surmise native Hawaiians would want a building/cultural center unaffiliated with astronomy interests.
