Maybe in some limited, haole centric, ie unable to empathize, way you are right. But really, kalakoa, your points, imo, are only valid in a vacuum.
To me, even though it is in its infancy, I appreciate the science off astronomy. Though often I imagine the telescopes are seen by some as statues commemorating modern mans dominance of the land. Not that that is why they were built, but still, they stand, and as if statues that commemorate the killing of buffalo for sport would, disgust those who lost all they knew to the men that do whatever they will without regard to what is sacred to others.
It’s simple really, but like global warming those that want to deny it will blind themselves to reality in order not to acknowledge it entirely, to the detriment of all.

Yet many others, the ones that go up for solstices and equinoxes, go to the summit region in their vehicles with assistance from the observatories. So how big or small a subset is this group who hike up but don't go to the summit. In addition, the area that the TMT will be built is easily visible from many observatories and visitors there would be very obvious, as they were the night after the recent DLNR operation. Trails to Lake Waiau are also easily visible from the summit access road.

I received these e-mails from DOH regarding the NPDES permit renewal.
If you watch the BIVN video, several people asked for a contested case hearing regarding this permit.It is unknown what will happen next.
"The Department of Health will receive public comments on the NPDES permit renewal at a public hearing on June 25. The hearing allows the public to provide their comments on the permit renewal. At this time, DOH is not aware of any necessary changes to the permit and the conditions of the permit are unchanged since it was issued five years ago. During the public comment period, if new information is presented that changes the conditions of the permit, this would be considered by DOH. The purpose of this NPDES permit is to provide conditions for safely managing storm water discharge during construction activity. DOH will work with the contractor to ensure conditions are in place for safely managing storm water discharge during construction."
"As I understand, CWB does not have a schedule at this time for the posting of the permit renewal. The program staff must first gather and review the public comments collected."

Aaron - information I received today from those that ought to know is that the NPDES permit renewal hearing is not a showstopper for TMT construction as the permit has already been extended. Apparently, this was also mentioned by the state AG last week (although I haven't seen that myself). So, basically, my understanding is the TMT have all the permits they need to restart construction. Quite how the result of the NPDES permit hearing will affect things down the road is not clear to me.
