Tom, I've heard the NPDES permit was renewed another five years. However, there was several people at the discretionary hearing on Tuesday, who requested that a contested case hearing be held. As you can figure, the main players are being tight lipped about the permit status.
Yes, the state AG did mention the NPDES permit was renewed another five
years at the NTP announcement last week.

the extension for the NPDES is a rubber stamp, nothing needs to be submitted

Pretty sure "contested case" status can't be granted after the permits are issued, but then Hawaii has its own special way of doing everything.
Lately wondering how much the necessary security will cost, and who will pay for it.

If can, can.
If no can, construction starts “this summer.”
Unlike Mauna Kea, Haleakala on Maui does have military observatories, with classified operations. The hardware for Reagan’s Star Wars initiative was tested there.
Once, on the back side of Kahului Airport near Kanaha Park, I saw the normally unused back runway gates open, and out drove three black SUV’s and a semi with a long trailer carrying a large unidentifiable object covered with a shiny black tarp labeled Raytheon. I think they reached the summit of Haleakala before anyone realized who Raytheon was, and what they do. It was a simpler time, before smart phones.

More evidence why all that stuff should be removed from that sacred mountain.

Aloha All,
Since I am ignorant, being fan of anti-social networking (excluding PunaWeb I guess) I am wondering when the next showdown will be between the TMT construction start (if it hasn’t started already) and the “protectors”.
Hopefully it will be before I return to school so I can do some pro TMT sign waving in contrast to the “protectors”.
I would hate for the big day of drama to be reported on and have no clue that I was late late late.
Hopefully PunaWeb will be enough for me to to have some notice...?
Anybody willing to share the gossip from the other side?
Cheer,
Kirt

I’m going out on a limb here, and my speculation is based on nothing, but I don’t believe an announcement with a starting date is a good idea. If the date is not forthcoming, Lao Tzu probably suggested 2500 years ago what we might expect:
He who knows, does not speak. He who speaks, does not know.

Kirt - I'm with HOTPE on this one. I think it's very unlikely the start date of TMT construction will be made public before it actually happens.

I understand that is would make no sense for a notice of construction to occur.
What I need is a notice of protesting (on the Big Island) to occur...so I can be there to support the TMT.
Make sense?
Cheers,
Kirt

Hmmm, two groups with extreme opposite viewpoints gathering at the same location. What could go wrong?
